Pros: Coaxial in/out, universal illuminated remote
Cons: DVD drive noise, freeze frame glitch.
The Bottom Line: Only did alittle research before purchase. I'd look into comparable models from other brands. I am not a Sony fan since I've had several Sony products that did not last.

| btm1367's Full Review: Toshiba SDV291 DVD/VCR Player |
I bought this unit for the bedroom. Price & brand name were the main factors for me. So far after a month I am happy with it. My tv is older and I was relieved to see that the unit has coaxial in/out. The first time I plugged it up the picture was distorted at the top but the second time(a couple days later) it worked fine. I am also happy that the remote is partially illuminated. It stays illuminated all the time. I would have preferred for the illumination to time out but no huge deal. The remote also controls my older Sanyo tv. Setup was fast & easy. It also played a dvd-r that my basic Apex dvd player would not play.
Grips? 1)The remote layout could have been better. Course that's the same grip with practically every remote. 2)The dvd drive makes more noise than I think one should. Note, I am listening to movies at low volumes. It also continues spinning(and making noise) if there's a dvd in it even if your just watching a tape or television. 3) I have experienced the brief freeze frame glitch mentioned in the SD-V280 reviews. 4) Lastly, I would have prefered a black finish.
I bought mine from HH Greg for $99. You should read the reviews for the SD-V280, SD-V290 & SD-V391 and do research before buying this unit. Had I seen those reviews I would not have gambled with Toshiba. More info on this unit is at http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/dvd/product.asp?model=SD-V291.
