Fat or thin, its still called "Killing Yourself"

Apr 11 '01

The Bottom Line Choose your methods of weightloss carefully. Don't get carried away. Your life, is worth so much more than physical beauty.

Of all the battles in my life, I would have to say that my weight has been the biggest and hardest battle I have ever had to face. My story is real, not just for me, but for thousands of other people in this world. Weight does not discriminate, It knows no race, sex or origin. Please read with the utmost consciousness.

This is me

In my short, but LONG 26 years of life, I have been through many trials. Leaving home at 16 to get married, putting myself through college, dealing with a loved ones drug problem, and being abused, and yes, my weight. You'd think the latter of those would have been the easiest. Well my friends, that's hardly so. My weight has been a struggle most all of my life. I am never in the middle, where I would say I am happy, but always rather on one extreme side or the other. In a world where thin is in, and perfect is the normal, its hard to make it from one day to the next without some kind of setback.

I have ranged in weight from 100lbs to 235lbs. That is hard to tell you. For the past year of my life, I have been in recovery. Last year this time, I was in a hospital, forcing down food and feeling like total scum. When I was 9 months pregnant, I was at my highest. Now with having my children, and getting older, I thought my teenage problems would cease, and the quest to be "perfect" would end. It did not. Instead my addiction only became worse. In 1995, after giving birth to my second son, I once again, became determined not to eat. I lost 100lbs in 4 months time. Yes, that is at a rate at 1lb per day. But you know when you have extra weight, no one seems to notice until its too late.

Since then, I have fought the battle everyday. I became addicted to ephedra, taking 4 times the daily dosage per day. Some of these pills included xenedrine, diet fuel, ripped fuel. To make them work better, I drank coffee on top of them. I have done nearly everything I could possibly do to lose the weight. To keep it off. To get more off. Never being satisfied. It has nearly killed me. And still might.

For those who do not know how dangerous ephedra is, I challenge you to read up about it. It is extremely damaging to your heart. Still, millions of men and women, including myself, are willing to risk such complications, just to ward off the teasing of schoolmates, coworkers, and most importantly, the voices that taunt them in their minds everyday of their lives.

Why should I tell you my story?

My reasoning is simple. I direct most of my attention to those of you with children. Because one day, one of you just might have to deal with this situation. And when it becomes your child, and not yourself, its a totally different perception. Our children, must be taught that physical beauty is not important. They need to have self respect, and confidence in theirselves. My dad always told me, that Self confidence, is the twin brother of success. He couldn't have been more correct.

What is the best way?

For those of you who are seeking to lose weight, eating healthy, and exercise is key. Doing it any other way, will just harm your health, your metabolism, and most importantly your self confidence. No pill can give you self confidence. Take advice from me, I have learned the hard way. You see, when I wasn't eating, I was on a high. It was no different than being on a drug. On the other hand it was torture, as it still is today. Your body begins to feed on starvation. When you do try to eat again, you can't hold it down, or in. And, it hurts. Emotionally, as well as physically.

Yo yo-ing is almost as detrimental. When you stop, and start and stop and start, you are causing just as much physical harm as not eating at all, or eating too much. If you keep your body from having calories, your body compensates by slowing metabolism down to keep from burning those calories you aren't receiving.

When you eat properly, (and any skinny girl, can tell you this) that you stay hungry all of the time. Hunger is a good thing. It is our body's way of communicating to us. If calories are being consumed, and expended, your metabolism increases, and calories are burned more rapidly. This causes hunger. Therefore you know you are healthy and your body is functioning properly.

If you are looking to lose weight, I can not stress enough how important exercise is. It is the only way, to rid yourself of excess fat, without harming your system. While using some of the diet plans can be good, your best bet is common sense. Its ok to have a snickers, or some chips. But not three snickers, or a whole bag of chips. And no matter what anyone says, we have all been there and done that.

To sum it all up, Please be careful in the methods of weightloss that you choose. Teach your children to eat properly, and don't force feed them. I only tell you these things in hopes that someone, somewhere never has to feel the anguish that I have felt over this issue.
