| gadixie86's Full Review: 2002 GMC Sierra K1500 Extended Cab |
The truck I will be reviewing is a 2002 GMC Sierra 1500, Extended-Cab Z71 with the SLE package. It was purchased in November 2001. As of February 2004 it had about 55,000 miles on it.
Interior
The cab of this truck is very roomy and spacious. In the front seats you have enough space to stretch out as far as you could possibly want. The seats are also very comfortable for any distance. As a driver, the only problem is the fact that the seat may be too comfortable and may make you sleepy! To remedy this, just put the window down and turn the excellent sound system up. My truck came equipped with a Bose CD player and four speakers, which can crank with the best of them.
The back bench seat is also rather large. You can fit three people for a long distance or four or five for short distances in the back. With two people in the back seat you have all the room you need for a long trip. It is also a good area to store stuff (which is what I use it for).
The instrument cluster is informative and easy to see. It is aesthetically pleasing, while still being useful. The information box, which tells you about engine problems, low fuel, etc. is very helpful. I know I've used it to stretch my fuel as far as it could go.
Exterior
My truck is black and it is very good looking. The GMC grille is good looking, while still managing to be intimidating. The paint can also take one heck of a beating.
Engine
My truck came equipped with a Vortec 4.8L V-8 automatic. It performs great. I have yet to have had to take the truck for anything more than routine maintenance. And that is with taking it off-road at least once once a week, normally more and using it to haul a ton of stuff.
Performance and Hauling
This truck handles like a dream. I can let go of the steering wheel and it will go straight forever, even without having had a recent alignment. You also can't tell if you're going fast or not. The truck doesn't even start to shake a little until around 100. At regular interstate speeds, it will feel like you're going about 35. There is no noise at all. The anti-lock brakes are also excellent, with a great stopping time. The push-button 4-wheel drive also works all the time and is very convenient.
Fuel-wise, it isn't too bad for a truck. I'd estimate about 16/19, but don't hold me to it. When hauling something, however, the fuel mileage doesn't decrease that much, which is a great plus.
This truck will also haul anything you could think of. Mine has the tow-haul package, which is engaged by simply pushing a button. My truck has hauled a 2-ton tractor for several hours at high interstate speeds; a trailer full of my junk, including a motorcycle, lawn mower, and a gun collection of about 40 guns with appropriate ammunition. The bed of the truck will also hold a lot of stuff. There are always at least 200 pounds of stuff in my bed at all times and you can haul about 100 concrete slabs in the bed.
Comparison with Competition
I have never been able to drive or ride in a competing model Ram, but I have ridden and driven a '00 F-150 X-Cab. This truck stacks up very favorably with the F-150. For one thing, the rear seat in the F-150 is a joke. I got cramped on a 15-minute trip and I wouldn't suggest ever riding in one. The seats themselves are also much less comfortable than in the Sierra. The Vortec engine also feels much more powerful.
