The Bottom Line The very specific step-by-step driving directions offered by www.shellgeostar.com make planning a European driving itinerary easy!

I have been in the midst of getting my travel itinerary fine-tuned for my upcoming trip to France in a few weeks. We will be spending some time in my favorite city, Paris. Then we will be driving in the countryside for five days, in the region around Normandy and the Loire Valley in France, before coming back for our last few days in Paris.

This is the first time I am traveling to Europe with my children. It will be the first time for my twenty-eight year old daughter and the second for my son-in-law. My twenty-six year old son is a very accomplished traveler, having backpacked through Europe many times. But he is excited about the prospect of actually staying in nice places over there, which will be a first for him.

In the planning of our itinerary for our driving portion, I couldn't have done it without the trustworthy and easy-to maneuver map web site:

Not only does it give very specific step-by-step driving directions, but shows the route on a small map of the specific area being planned. You put in the beginning and final destination of your journey, with a place to enter any side trips or diversions you might want to make.

The most helpful part of the site for me is that it tells me exactly how long each leg of my trip is. If I want to know how far a detour for a certain castle or chateau is, I enter it onto the site ,from where I will be at that point in my trip. It tells me exactly how many minutes it will take, after asking if we will be traveling at a slow, moderate or fast speed, and how many miles or kilometers it will be.

It offers several options that similar web sites that I have found do not. There is the option of displaying the distance in either kilometers or miles. Since both the signs and the cars measure in kilometers, this makes it much easier to calculate. I have the option of finding the shortest or the fastest or the most scenic route.

It offers information on tolls, how frequent and how much they cost. It tells me of nearby attractions, restaurants and hotels.

There is also an option to make maps of the areas someone might be visiting, but I find, for me ,by far the most useful option this site offers are the step-by-step driving instructions. When it comes to maps, I still depend on my trusty Michelin maps, which are incredibly detailed.

Armed with these very specific directions, and our wonderful Michelin maps, I am hoping we will make history for my family and NOT GET LOST.
