10 Things it Doesn't Mean if I Add You to the WOT!
by lorendiac | Apr 11 '01
Use the WOT to keep track of people whose opinions you want to read regularly, and ignore anyone who tries to lay down complicated rules for you.

... since the last comment.

I feel we share nearly precisely the same "philosophy" of WOT practice.

However, there are certain cases in which my trusting of someone is also a veiled hope that they will at the very least come and have a look at some of my writing, and if they like it, add me to their WOT-- not for vanity's sake (heaven forfend), but in the spirit of camraderie and fellowship. Such cases are ones in which I am so taken with an author's reviews and writing style, and oftentimes, wit and intelligence, that I can almost assume that they will respect the common traits in my own stuff.

For what it is worth (ugh-- sorry, this is starting to get soggy), you fall into that category. I won't plague you (ever again?!) with exhortations to read anything of mine, but this does seem like a good spot to invite you to try.

Cheers-

John

I believe we have similar criteria for out WOT's.

I will only add people who are reasonably good writers. By that, I mean they have to make a good argument either for or against a product, and they have to use good grammar and spelling.

I also choose people who write about things I'm interested in--at least some of the time.

To me, the WOT is simply a list of favorite writers--period.

This is where being lame comes in handy. I rarely get around to checking out people who put me on their WoT for at least several days after they add me. Therefore, most of the idiots who do it just to get Trusted remove themselves from consideration before I have to lift a finger to figure out if they're the sort of people I'd Trust anyway.

And I wish I had the kind of free time required to read every review by every reviewer whom I feel is deserving of being Trusted. It'll never happen. People who expect that have waaaaay too much free time.

nice essay. :)

mike.holmes: This might interest you. A few weeks ago I noticed you had added me to your own WOT, and I went and looked at various opinions of yours, and somehow ended up with the thought in my mind that I had finally added you to my own WOT as well. It wasn't until tonight that I happened to discover you weren't on my list at all. Either a computer burped at the wrong moment, or else my own memory failed, possibly because something in real life may have called me away from the computer just after I read and rated another of your opinions, and just before I was about to click to Trust you. Oh well. All's well that ends well, better later than never, and any other cliches that seem appropriate at a time like this :)

You have succinctly described what a WOT should not be. I am honored to be on your WOT list and I will try to write up to your standards. I am really disappointed that you will not lend me money though because I've got this great investment idea concerning the Brooklyn Bridge. Kidding aside, these are valid points that should be utilized by all of us instead of playing games.

Nice to hear! My web of trust is tiny - I haven't been hear long and don't write and read as much as I would like.

Like you, I chose my wee little trust list on the basis of essays or opinions I've read. Especially for prolific writers, though, I have no time to read EVERYTHING, and I don't read stuff on items I cannot get here or have no interest in.

Keep it up, please!
Cheers,
Kate

You summed it up brilliantly. You have been here a little longer than I have, but I have noticed some of the same games. Keep up the great writing and caution:)

I couldn't agree with you more. In fact, if I had written this review, I would have stated most of the same things. I've had people add me to their WOT list lately and then a few days later remove me. I guess because I didn't add them to mine. I am honored when I am added to other's WOT, but I do not feel obligated to add them to mine.
