We replaced our 10-yr old KitchenAid black compactor that finally broke - the motor still works but doesn't go up and down. The Kenmore looks nice in stainless steel, which is why we bought it. The top and bottom are black. I wanted stainless steel from top to bottom, but the price goes even higher.
The Kenmore is very basic. It has two controls: compact and switch to stay down. When you close the door, a spray bottle squirts a mist of deodorant to keep odor down. We didn't like the loud bang the mechanism for the spray bottle makes while closing the door.
I don't think compactors in general are worth what they are going for. They're just glorified garage door openers.
I paid $469.88 at Sears on sale - the only stainless steel look for under $500. A lot of money but it does the job.
We only had it for 2 months so I can't tell you about reliability but we expect compactors to last at least 7 years.
