Valentines Day was quickly approaching and we had absolutely no plans for the weekend. It was then that my dear hubby suggested that we should make some plans. It was also Family Day Weekend in Alberta and we desired to do something fun with our daughter. He mentioned that we should head out toward the mountains and stay out there for a day or two. Towards the phone he immediately went and dialed the number to the Delta Lodge at Kananaskis.
He managed to book Friday the 13th, but the 14th and the 15th were completely booked. We were happy to get at least one night and realized that we should have thought about planning this many weeks ago. I am most certain that we will take that into account for next year.
Location
This amazing resort is nestled in Kananaskis Village surrounded by the Canadian Rockies about 90 minutes from Calgary International Airport. The drive does not seem that long, as the view is spectacular as you drive west and slowly approach the mountains.
Lobby
As we drove up to the Lodge I was already impressed. As soon as we got out of our SUV, the concierge was there to open the door for us with a smile on his face. The lobby was quite large with many comfy sofas and plush chairs along with a huge stone wood-burning fireplace. My husband went to check in and I immediately headed for a chair close to the warmth of the fireplace. Large windows on either side let in bright warm sunlight with an amazing view.
Within minutes he and my daughter came over with grins on their faces. He mentioned that check-in was smooth and they were ready to get our luggage up to our room and begin to explore.
Rooms
Delta Lodge at Kananaskis has 251 Guest Rooms which consist of:
~ 179 Delta Rooms
~ 8 Deluxe King Rooms
~ 14 Deluxe Family Rooms
~ 28 Deluxe Loft Rooms
~ 8 Executive Suite Rooms
~ 2 Superior Suites
~ 2 Leader's Suites (King)
~ Leader's Suite (One Bedroom)
~ 8 Standard Rooms
We booked an Executive Suite Room as it had a separate bedroom with a hideaway sofa and apparently a mirrored step up whirlpool. Once we entered the room I was impressed. It was huge, about 600 sq. ft. There was a large closet near the front door and across from it a vanity with sink. The main area had a writing desk, hideaway sofa, coffee table and end table, television and a separate round table with two wing back chairs. To the right, I saw French doors. We guessed that our bedroom was in there and decided to enter. As soon as I entered the room I saw the step up whirlpool completely surrounded by mirrors. The tub area was absolutely gigantic! Of course, we had a King size bed, a television and a large comfy chair. The bathroom (off the bedroom as well as an entrance from the main area) was nice and large as well with a shower.
The decorating in the room was ok. I mentioned to my hubby that the small deer on the wallpaper was slightly outdated. He chuckled at me and said that it was very woodsy and that we were in a lodge in the Rockies. He was right and it was cozy.

We participated in some of the resort activities and our daughter had a great time! We actually won the scavenger hunt
our daughter was so excited.
My husband and I both decided on relaxation massages at the Summit Spa and we were completely impressed. We both had the same RMT that afternoon and she was fabulous. The staff there was very professional and courteous and we will definitely go again when we stay at the Lodge. My husband and daughter used the pool area and they loved it. Towels were provided for them.
~ Dining
Obsessions Deli and Chocolatier - flaky croissants to lattes, hearty stews and sandwiches, from Pizza Hut to their famous Eggel, the Deli has something to satisfy all tastes. The service is wonderful here as Saturday morning I decided to grab a hot chocolate.
- Bighorn Lounge - menu features a variety of light appetizers including nachos, wings & ribs. Children are allowed in this lounge, but after 9:00 p.m. no minors are permitted.
- Bradys Market - tastes of the Mediterranean and delectable fondues...not really child friendly.
- The Fireweed Grill - Open for breakfast, lunch & dinner daily, featuring Rocky Mountain fare with a healthy dose of variety.
We ate at The Fireweed Grill both the Friday evening and then Saturday morning for breakfast. The food was absolutely amazing and a very varied menu. The Friday night, I had Prime Rib and my husband decided to try something different and chose Buffalo. They also have a childrens menu which solidified our decision to eat here as kids can be very picky. The service was wonderful as well.
Overall, the Delta Lodge At Kananaskis exceeded our expectations. I am hoping that we will go there this spring or summer for a night or two. I wonder if we should be booking now?
