I started with AT&T back in Boulder, CO. I lived in a house at 8250 feet and the local store said they were the best provider to go with to get remote service up there. I told them that even if I was in the Batman cave in the center of the earth, I wanted to be able to make a phone call. They recommended the Seimen 46 cell phone with AT&T service. It had all services: CDMA, TDMA, GPRS, analog, whatever. They were sort of right. I received more phone calls and more time passed between dropped calls than when I was on my Verizon phone.
On my cross country drive while moving back to NYC the phone was nearly useless. I would say for the majority of the country from Colorado to NY on Route 80 you will not be able to make a phone call. If you can, it wont be clear enough to have anything resembling a conversation.
So I finally get to NYC and think, no problem, how can a cell phone not work in NYC of all places? I swear, I could be standing next to an AT&T cell phone tower and the words can you hear me now?!?! would escape my lips no less than a dozen times as I dance around hoping to find that single pocket of air where AT&T will actually provide service to their customers. I never found that pocket of air and quite frankly I dont think it exists anywhere. I paid the $175 penalty or whatever it was and cancelled my contract. I ported my number over to Verizon and have been a happy customer ever since. In every location where I could not make a call (or could barely make a call) on my AT&T phone (my office, my apartment, the entire train ride from Grand Central to Katonah, my parents house, inside any bar in NY) my Verizon phone is usually crystal clear and has a full signal.
AT&T should be embarrassed to take money from their customers for the service they provide (I should say lack of service they provide). And good luck with customer service, I dont think I ever waited less than 20 minutes to talk to someone and it was usually a much longer wait. I have friends in NYC as well that have AT&T and they have the same problems that I used to have. Luck for them, I let them use my Verizon phone when they need to make an important call and cant on their phones. Do not walk away from AT&T RUN!!!
