The Bottom Line Action movies are some of the most fun to watch, even if they are unbelievable. Here are some of my absolute favorites.

Ah, the action movie, it thrills us and provides suspense, not to mention often mind-boggling special effects. Here are my favorite action movies of all time in no particular order.

"The Road Warrior"
Starring: Mel Gibson

This is one of the installments of the Mad Max Trilogy about a post apocolyptic world where survival of the fittest rules. Max must protect a small oil town who is under attack by villianous desert prowlers that want the crude oil for themselves. The child with the bladed boomerang is one of the most memorable action movie characters. The film is grisly, well shot, and visually stunning. It ends with an action scene containing a train, four-wheelers, and loads of other hardcore vehicles. The violence is not for some, but if you're looking for action movies obviously that doesn't matter to you.

"Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"
Starring: Harrison Ford, Sean Connery
Directed by: Steven Spielberg

Everyone thinks the "Raiders" is the best film in the Indiana Jones Trilogy. I love that movie too but I like this one even more. Jones is on the track of the Holy Grail that Christ used at the Last Supper. Connery plays Indiana's dad who kept a diary of clues. However, the Nazis want the Grail as well and are on the chase. While avoiding the Germans, Jones faces off with an evil magnate in the chamber where an ancient knight guards the Cup of Christ. This installment has more comedy than the rest and Connery is incredibly fun to watch. It's just a great piece of action.

"The Hunt for Red October"
Starring: Alec Baldwin, Sean Connery, Scott Glenn, James
Earl Jones, Richard Jordan, Sam Niell, Tim Curry
Directed by: Michael McTiernan

Based on Tom Clancy's book of the same title, "Hunt" is a suspenseful piece of work. Russian General Ramius is on a nuclear missile ship that is supposedly ordered to perform missile drills along the U.S. Coast. CIA officials order operations to destroy Ramius (Connnery) before he reaches the U.S. But CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Baldwin) thinks that Ramius wants to defect. He must prove this before Ramius and his crew are destroyed. There is less violent action than suspense in this one, but that makes up for it. Great acting from Connery who is always in command on the Red October.

"Seven"
Starring: Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin
Spacey
Directed by: David Fincher

Dark, intense, and terrifying pretty much describe "Seven". Pitt and Freeman are two New York detectives on the search for a murderer who uses the seven deadly sins to decide who he kills. The entire movie is spent tracking him, but the killer is always in control. The movie is frightening because while John Doe (the killer) uses heinous acts to murder, when you hear him speak it seems to make sense. That's the genius of the film, it captivates one to the point that such a frightening killer can have a mental grasp on the viewer. The movie really messes with your head and keeps you guessing. Great dark direction from Fincher.

"The Silence of the Lambs"
Starring: Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Scott Glenn
Directed by: Jonathon Demme

"Silence" is both action and drama. It's another movie that severely messes with you. Agent Trainee Clarice Starling is asked to interview cannibalistic psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins) to get a profile on a serial killer named Buffalo Bill. Lecter says that Bill wants to make a dress out of their skins. Such a suspenseful piece, and there are fireworks between Hopkins and Foster on screen. Lecter is delightfully evil while Foster plays her role perfectly. They both won Academy Awards for their performances. Demme's camera work is exquisite, he won an Oscar for Director and the film won Best Picture as well. Hannibal will haunt you.

"Raiders of the Lost Ark"
Starring: Harrison Ford
Directed by: Steven Spielberg

What most call the best Indiana Jones movie is very good. Jones is on the search for the Lost Ark of the Covenant that the Israelites carried with them. This is such a great movie, it's full of action from the marketplace scenes, to action-packed moments with tanks and airplanes. The best scene is where Jones fights a guy significantly larger than him but is saved by a low going plan propeller. You can guess what happens. One of Spielberg's early classics. The film was nominated for Best Picture which is rare for a movie like this to be. The mix of comedy in this is great too.

There are so many great action flicks out there, but these are my six favorite. Here are some honorable mentions for you:
- Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
- Face/Off
- Goldfinger
- From Russia With Love
- The Rock
- Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
- Jaws
- 12 Monkeys
