Thoroughly Modern Musicals
by quasar | Apr 12 '01
The combination of music and laughter is magical, and most of these movies combined the two exceptionally well.

Thanks for the review of the top 10. Glad to see that Oklahoma is nowhere on the list. Love the Music Man!

Sound of Music is about 20th or so on my list. I think my top 25 all deserve a place on the top 10. It really was very hard limiting it to 10 (15 if you include the honorable mentions).

I laughed my way through the South Park movie, but it just isn't in the same league as these other movies.

I would have absolutely no problem making a top 40 musicals list - I left off so many wonderful movies it isn't even funny. Do go see TMM - it is just amazing.

My mom adores musicals and dance, and I spent most of my childhood listening to her tapes and watching her favorite movies as opposed to soaking up the pop culture. Interesting list you've got there. You've left off some of my favorites (My Fair Lady, Singin' in the Rain, Gigi, which is more than a honorable mention in my book), but I must thank you for introducing me to something new - Thoroughly Modern Millie. Considering its competition, it must be one heck of a movie. Nice post!

That brought back memories (Reply to this comment)

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was one of my favorite films when I was a kid, but I haven't actually seen it in years. Now I feel the urge to go out and see it again.

Thank you very much for making me look back.

I just tried to leave this but it disappeared...oh well.

I just noticed Evita on your list...so much for not having a musical by The Troll(nope, I'm not a fan of...Him).
However, you get to keep the VH because your review was just great- and Evita is at least somewhat less annoying than anything else that whatsisname wrote, lol.

Evita is Andrew Lloyd Webber. I don't generally like his musicals, and I was amazed I liked the movie version of Evita.

I love this list- despite the fact that you completely stumped me in the Cafe. ;)

VH for being perfectly written, with just enough info to make each one interesting. I would give you an even higher rating, if one were available, for leaving out everything by Annoying Lloyd Weber...
