Try Sears HE detergent -- cleans great, costs way less (Reply to this comment)
by toddabearsf
Sears sells a full line of HE detergent in their hardware department for 1/3 to 1/4 of the cost of Tide HE.
Sears HE powdered detergents come in plastic buckets in three sizes: 125 loads, 175 loads and 275 loads. 125 load size is $15.99, 175 load size is $19.99 and 275 load size is $24.99. It cleans like a dream in my front loader washer and I recommend it highly. Compare the price to Tide HE which costs $9.49 to $9.99 for 31 loads!
There's also Sears HE liquid detergent which comes in a 66-use bottle for $11.99. Compare that to Tide HE liquid which comes in a 26-use bottle for $9.49 to $9.99 depending on where you buy it. Sears also has a 33-use bottle for $6.99, still considerably cheaper than Tide HE.
The Sears HE detergent is so much a better buy it's not funny. It cleans just as well, too, being exactly formulated for high-efficiency machines, especially front loaders. Rinses cleanly, without leaving a large load of towels stiff with detergent still in them.
Sears also offers variations on the HE detergent with the following choices (not all of which come in all sizes):
Regular, secented, enzyme detergent (powder and liquid)
Free of dye and perfumes with enzymes (powder and liquid)
Scented with enzymes and fabric softener in it (power and liquid)
Scented with bleach substitute (liquid only)
Scented with all-fabric color-safe bleach (powder only)
Scented with Oxi-Clean laundry booster (powder only - 120 loads for $15.99 rather than 125 loads)
Seriously, with those choices at those prices, if you live near a Sears store, buy their detergent for your high-efficiency machine.
The 275-use size at $24.99 is 9.1 cents per load -- but be warned, it's a 5-gallon bucket and weighs just a tad over 34 pounds! But if you can lift it and have the room to store it, it's a fantastic buy. The snap-on lid will keep moisture out, too, so the powder stays free-flowing.
Tide HE, Wisk HE and Gain HE are all overpriced compared to standard detergent, but Sears HE is well-priced, and marketed for top loaders, too. (You can't use regular detergent in a high-efficiency machine, but HE detergent works fine in a standard washer.)

High Tide (Reply to this comment)
by nagels
A recent article in Consumer Reports had Tide at the top of the heap. These rankings change periodically, but for now Tide's the one. Mrs. Spudman wants to give it a try. Is it true that Tide is the favorite detergent of sailors and surfers?
I know that cheerleaders,of course, favor Cheer.

bought a front load with the new place. All I can say is the competitors better come out with a new detergent because my water bill is less but the detergent bill is higher. Definitely a negative for this guy....
BUT great review as usual Ms. Mountain...

a front load washer and I love it!! I use both of these but in the powder form since it is cheaper (at Wal-Mart) I like the gain because it smells fresher and my clothes seem to be just a clean.
Nice review!!
