Greatest Biblical Films (not entirely traditional)
by janesbit1 | Apr 12 '01
While the 1950's are widely remembered for their Biblical epics, other films from other areas actually have far greater spiritual impact.

I especially liked the inclusion of two worthy, non-traditional films: "Godspell" (which I saw in a theatre when it opened and watched 6 nuns in full habit walk out of!) and "Inherit the Wind" (with my favorite God quote: "God created Man in his own image, and Man, being a gentleman, returned the compliment.")

I loved 'Jesus Christ Superstar', and 'The Last Temptation of Christ'....a little reality never hurt anybody! Great job.

Great Job (Reply to this comment)

This is a very good review and I particularly liked your number 1 choice. I was not allowed to see this movie in my hometown due to religious zealots who had not seen the film but boycotted it anyway. I even had to move through protesters in NYC who told me I'd go to hell if I saw the film. I agree with you that it was an extremely spiritual movie. Thanks for the great job.

Great stuff. Your top choices, wonderful and surprisingly... no back-lash for them from the very religious. Nicely presented.

Charlton Heston (Reply to this comment)

Of course everyone automatically thinks Charlton Heston "is" Moses. But it is a bit odd to think of "Moses" as the president of the NRA (Nat'l Rifle Association) and therefore fervent defendant of the first amendment...

I liked this...very interesting. Only thing- It's "Samson," not "Sampson." Just thought you'd like to know! *^_^* Have a great day! *DUCKY*

Life of Brian is often regarded as the weakest of the Python films. For any Python fans who want to see more about the ideas they had in mind, I'd suggest renting the DVD version and checking out the two commentary tracks... It helped me appreciate the film more than I had before (though The Holy Grail is still their best work)

Nicely written, (Reply to this comment)

as well as controversial. While I don't agree with many of your choices in terms of deeming them "Biblical", I do agree they are fine films with the possible exception of Life Of Brian which I have never been able to sit through without turning it off in disgust (this coming from a Python fan).

Well written.
