Amazon.com is Great!

The Bottom Line Amazon.com has great selection, prices, customer service.

I do most of my book shopping at Amazon.com. Not to say I buy all my books there. I do enjoy going to a physical book store, browsing around, not knowing what I want, and leaving with something to enjoy. But for other needs, especially when I know exactly what book I want, I go to Amazon.com. Why? A few major reasons:
selection, this place truly is the world's largest bookstore. They have everything, most things in stock that are ready to ship in one or two days to you.
Price - good prices, though there are some online bookstores that generally have lower prices, Amazon's are much lower than physical bookstores, the average book sells for 20%-40% off of list price.
Customer Support Amazon has spent millions and millions of dollars to build up an infrastructure to support their huge customer base. And it shows. Once I ordered a book and regretted it a minute later. Upon calling Amazon, a very friendly customer service rep was able to cancel my order no questions asked, no problems at all. Another time a book shipped to me, but got lost in the mail. I emailed Amazon and they promptly responded saying that they didn't know what happened, but they were sorry and mailed the same book out through two day express mail at no cost to me. Sure enough, two days later, that book arrived at my doorstep.
CommunityThe user community that they have built up is great. The site allows users to write reviews of books. See a book you think might be worth buying? See not only what critics say, but also what readers like yourself, have to say about the book. Amazon gives the ranking of the book out of its total inventory. Community circles are another cool feature, though some complain of invasion of privacy. Look up a geographic place (city or town), a company, a college or university, and see what books (and other items like CDs as well) people from that organization or place are buying the most of from Amazon. Its always interesting to see what people at my company are buying from Amazon - amazingly books totally unrelated to my company's business (or I don't see how Harry Potter and Tom Clancy novels relate to it).
PersonalizationAmazon uses what must be a very complex customer relationship tool to make their recommendations. It is done so well. So often I access the site and they recommend a book to me right up my alley. What does this mean? Better reading for me, more money for them.

So, in conclusion, for most book buying needs, Amazon.com is a great place. No, it will never replace the joy I get from spending an hour or two browsing a local physical bookstore, but for most needs, it tops anywhere else.
