Handspring - Not your ordinary organizer

Written: Mar 13 '01
Pros:Decent Price, Completely Expandable, Tons of memory
Cons:Stylus can scratch the screen, Initial HotSync cradle only comes in USB.
The Bottom Line: The Handspring Visor Deluxe provides a professional and high-quality approach to organizing your life via PDA, and provides the most versatility out of any PDA designer on the market today.

I recently bought a Handspring Visor Deluxe, in Blue, from my local Target store. It came with a free leather case, which was very helpful.
I originally began my search for a PDA about a year ago, when I was introduced to the Handspring Visor. I thought at that point that it was a rather nice PDA, but not something that I needed to invest in at that point in time. So, instead, I bought a regular paper-and-pencil organizer, and set out to organize my life.
I soon found out that it is not easy keeping a paper-and-pencil organizer up to date, nor is it an efficient way of organizing your life. So, once again, I continued on in my search of a PDA. I looked at many, but, just as before, my mouse stopped "clicking" when I got to the Handspring Visor. This handy little computer had everything that I needed, and more. Not only could I have an appointments list, a to-do list, a daily calendar which will alert me of important events before they happen, but I could also download e-mail to my Visor, compose e-mail, take notes in class, and (for the curious minded) find out the time of any major city around the world. The Handspring Visor turned out to be just what I needed to organize my life in a timely fashion. I did, however, upgrade from the most basic model, to the Handspring Visor Deluxe, because it was only about 60 dollars more, and that way I would be guaranteed never to run out of space. I did not, in my current situation, find it necessary to upgrade to the Visor Platinum, which boasts a 50% faster processing time.
So, is there anything bad about this wonderful Visor? Yes, but they are minor things. First off, when you initially buy the handspring Visor Deluxe, the only HotSync cradle that is offered is one that connects to a USB port, leaving anyone who has an older computer with only Serial ports, in the dark. The HotSync cradle is used to download new software to your Visor via PC, and to "manage" your files that can be deleted. To buy a Serial cradle will cost you an extra 30 dollars. However, before you make this investment, check the back of your older pc to see if you do in fact have a USB port. Even my 150 mhz. Packard Bell Pentium 1 processor PC, which was 5 years old, had a USB port hidden in the back.
Overall, I would recommend the Handspring Visor Deluxe over a Palm Pilot, or similar models, anyday. Not only does the Handspring Visor Deluxe offer a more "organizer" approach in its format, it is also completely expandable, meaning you can add a phone, a digital camera, etc. to it, which is not possible with other models from similar brands. You certainly get more than you expect when you buy a Handspring Visor Deluxe. Try it out, and you'll never go back to paper and pencil scheduling again.
