| chandaman's Full Review: IBM VEO Connect Advanced Webcam - USB |
Picked up a Veo Advanced Connect on an impulse buy and it has to be one of my worst purchases ever.
After installing it and following the instructions precisely (including installing the software and *then* plugging the camera), it simply does not work as advertised.
The picture quality is not that terrible. The problem is it ridiculously bad frame rate. I tested it with Yahoo Messenger, the included Netmeeting, CUSeeme, Chillcam and a video capture utility that polls whatever capture device you select. In all these cases, the frame rate was 1 (one) frame per second. And this was on preview mode, without even broadcasting anything!
Different settings and different resolutions did nothing at all (the camera kept being stuck at 1 fps even at the lowest resolution, 160x120). I also tried every possible patch for USB, USB settings in the BIOS, updated Veo drivers at Windows Update... nothing. Same result.
I have a VIA KT133a chipset and after reading of some possible problems with the KT133a's USB implementation, I decided to test it on a friend's computer... to try to rule out the camera as defective. Same problem on my friend's computer, with an nForce chipset and better RAM + processor.
The troubleshooting section of the manual is very brief and doesn't even cover frame rate problems. I emailed Veo's customer "support" with a detailed description of this problem, but haven't received a reply. This was exactly eight days ago, so I can forget about any help from them.
This one is going back to the store, where I'll try to exchange it for a Creative NX or a Logitech. I guess unknown or second-rate brands are unknown and second-rate for a reason. Stay away from this one.
