| justice944's Full Review: Roller Coaster Tycoon For Windows |
Rollercoaster Tycoon cracked me up when i first popped in the CD. This game brought back memories of me going off to the amusement park with the family. You can tell right away this game will be fun. Not only is it fun, but even a child could learn to play.
The objective: Create a thriving theme park. To do this you must build bigger and better rides, lower prices, build food and bathroom stalls, in other words please the customer. This is never easy, because not all the customers are ever satisfied at once. I find you have to constantly change prices and build new rides to keep guest coming and staying. Not to worry if you notice that no new guests seem to be arriving, the game allows you to advertise your park. In no time more guests will be knocking down the door to get in.
Maintenance is the key word for this game. Rides constantly breakdown, and the walkways of the park are always trashed. Why are they trashed you ask, well it's because half the guests throw up all over the place. Watching guests get off a wild ride and then spewing all over the walkway is very funny. However, you must clean their messes, or your guests will leave. To keep your park maintained you must hire 4 types of workers. The handyman sweeps foot paths, mows the grass, waters flowers and empties trash cans. The mechanic fixes and inspects rides. The security guards prevent vandalism and keep the park safe. The entertainers are guys in funny animal costumes that run around the park dancing to keep guests happy. The animal characters are quite amusing and are good for a laugh. There's a tiger, panda and elephant costume. I think you should be able to get more animal characters, but oh well.
There are several different types of rides to build ranging from the fast rollercoasters to the more gentle ferris wheel. When you first start your park, you can't afford to build a coaster just yet. Just go on ahead and build a less expensive, and also less thrilling ride. You will then see annoying guests arrive. They'll either think the ride you built isn't thrilling enough, you're charging too much or the ride is great. Most guests want something more thrilling, but the few guests that enjoy you're one little ride will be the kick start of your park. If you see guests complaining about the price, just lower it a little. The guests complain a lot, so just get used to it. One thing I don't like is that after a while guests stop liking your older rides, so they won't pay as much for them. So keep building new rides.
You can track the guests of your park. Each guest has a profile. This is a neat attribute of the game. Different guests have different tolerances for certain rides. Also, each guest has a "thrill factor". The higher the "thrill factor" the more thrilling the ride has to be for him to like it. The profile shows whether the guest is happy, sad, neither or sick. The guest's face is hilarious if he is really sick. The profile also shows if the guest is hungry, thirsty, or needs to use the bathroom. Make sure you have plenty of facilities, or else he'll want to go home.
When you are ready to build a coaster, i suggest you build one that's already designed. It is hard to design a custom coaster. You may build a coaster that looks cool and thrilling, but when you test it, you realize half the coasters you design don't even work. Nothing is more frustrating then spending time designing a coaster and then finding out it doesn't work. If the coaster doesn't end up working no worries, you don't lose money. Just demolish the sucker and start again, you'll get your money back.
The game starts out with 3 playable scenarios. After completion of the easier scenarios, the more challenging scenarios become available to you. Some of the more challenging scenarios already have some rides and guests so you don't have to start from scratch. The game would be better if you could play all the scenarios right off the bat.
This game is funny and amusing. The gameplay isn't great, but decent. There are a ton of rides to choose from, so it'll take some time to build them all. You will get addicted because the game is fun, and it will keep you entertained. After a while though, you do get tired of the music.
