Cons: Two-use bottle but difficult to tell how much has been used due to opaque container.
The Bottom Line: The Drano Max Gel worked perfectly the first time and without any mess or hassle. It did exactly what the product label states.

| avaloncourt's Full Review: Drano Max Gel Clog Remover |
I was very skeptical about this product but it absolutely changed my mind about clog-removing products. It actually does what it advertises. Bravo!
Drano Max Gel comes in a two-use 32 ounce child-proof bottle for standard applications. The gel is slightly yellow with a not-too-solid consistency.
The standard instruction call for the use of half of the 32 ounce bottle unless the drains are slow-running or have fully standing water. A full bottle is call for in these situations. My own clog happened to be very slow draining and the full bottle application was used.
The bottle has an outside label marking for half-bottle usage but the bottle is opaque red. This would make it very difficult to tell what quantity has been used (the gel is hard to see in the bottle) and would require a flashlight and a guess to get a reasonably accurate half-bottle remaining. It would have been far better to have a clear line with a level mark up the side of the bottle such as in motor oil containers.
The product instructions recommend a waiting time of 15 minutes for standard clogs or 30 minutes for tougher situations. I used the longer 30 minute period because of the density of the clog.
The bottle was purchase for $4.69 at a grocery store. The easy and short (2 lines) product instructions made the application a snap.
This product is NOT for use in toilets and the Drano website warns against using it for that application. Drano makes other products for toilet use.
I would highly recommend the use of kitchen gloves while handling this product. The product is caustic and poisonous. Being a gel form it will most likely adhere upon contact with skin causing chemical burns. If you should get this on your skin have another sink readily accessible with running water to wash it off as quickly as possible. If no other sink is available, keep a container of water available for emergencies.
As with all dangerous products, keep them away from children. Since drain cleaners contain chemicals which will burn humans, ingestion is an emergency situation. Never induce vomiting after it has been ingested. The product will burn the linings of the digestive system going in but vomiting will also cause more damage as it exits. Keep the child/person calm and immediately call 911 and/or the Poison Control Center (see the inside front cover of your telephone book) for instructions.
When using the Drano Max Gel be very careful while pouring. Don't pour the contents out too fast as it may splash on you or surrounding items. The contents are very strong and may damage fabric. It's a good idea to wear old clothing when performing this step.
The Drano Max Gel is moderately thick but not unmanageable. If there is no water currently in the basin/tub slowly pour the contents into the drain itself. Depending on the density of the clog it may begin to back up quickly. Stop pouring as this happens. Allow the gel to work its way into the clog. As it proceeds down the drain add more Drano Max Gel into the drain until the half-bottle (mild clogs) or full-bottle (tough clogs) has been used.
If there is standing water position the pour over the drain above the water line. Pour very slowly. Keep the bottle opening close to the water to help avoid splashing. Be very careful, this is a gel and will ooze out and drop into the water. Rinse any gel which has splashed onto you immediately. The gel is heavier than water and will sink to the drain and work its way into the drain pipe. A situation involving standing water calls for full bottle contents to be used. Continue pouring slowly and evenly into the water over the drain. Make sure, as in the instructions above, not to pour too quickly. Only use enough at a time to allow the product to efficiently enter the drain. You don't want it spreading throughout the water in the tub/basin.
The product is safe for all types of household plumbing (with the exception of toilets) and can be used in clogged drains containing garbage disposals as well.
I have used the product line by the major competitor to Drano several times with mediocre to absolutely dismal results. Drano Max Gel is the first drain clog removal product I have ever used that actually performed to expectations and it worked perfectly. The Drano Max gel form keeps it well locked into the drain clog where it needs to work. The 'liquid' products have nearly no contact time which is an absolute requirement to break up the clog.
Drano has absolutely won a loyal customer in me with their Drano Max Gel product.
