the best HE detergent I have ever used for HE washers OR regular washers is Amway/Quixtar, SA8 exploding crystals. This detergent is superior in all aspects; works great in top or font loaders, only ONE OUNCE cleans a whole load even in cold water!!

I just got this sample (Reply to this comment)
by jo.com
in the mail. I haven't used it. I am so trying (and being successful actually) at going organic - right, wrong, it works, it doesn't- who knows. I'm trying. But I will take it camping with us! I actually find nothing takes tough stains out. My husband has always been a Tide fan. I just don't see any differnces among brands! jo

Front-loaders (Reply to this comment)
by Penguinlady
I've had front-loaders for the past 25 years and I've always used the same detergents as people buy for top-loaders. I didn't even know there were special ones! My current machine doesn't have a window, so I don't know if I'm overdoing it, but I use about 66% to 75% of the scoop, instead of a full one. (I use powder, whatever is on sale at Costco.) Maybe I'll try this the next time I run out - thanks for the heads-up!

I noticed recently that Gain makes liquid fabric softener now. I don't know how long this has been going on, but that stuff sure does smell good also.
