A Choice I'm Glad I MadeApr 14 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Work study is well worth it! Here is my story and personal recommendations. At last, the long awaited envelope arrived in the mail. It was time to discover how much money I would be getting to help with the cost of college. Everything looked good... then I spotted work study as part of my financial aid package. I didn't want anything to interfere with my time, and I put in a petition. The school responded and strongly suggested I give it a try. So I talked to a couple alumni who replied that it was an easy way to get money, and decided to give it a try. It is something I haven't regretted since I got my job in the recreation center. At first, things were a little hectic and I was starting to wonder if I'd made a mistake. There were a whole bunch of forms to fill out and applications to turn in. It was a lot of stress I felt like I didn't really need on top of the stresses of beginning class. But once my job was obtained, things sailed very smoothly and I was happy I'd chosen work study instead of a part time job. My hours? I picked them based on my classes. My duties? Show up to work. Answer the phone once in a while, take a message if needed. Now I certainly don't mean to say that all work study positions are so easy. But there were a large variety, and we picked what best fit our interests and time constraints. (The packet with all the forms outlined each job: where it was, what you needed to do, when they needed you to be available, etc.) The position I have is great because we get to work out while we're at work. We can also do homework, which is a big plus. I can honestly say that I got a lot of studying and such done that may not have otherwise gotten done, because I had to be at work and that was all I had to do. Anyway, my employer is very understanding that his employees are students, and therefore gives us a lot of space to do stuff like homework. I would highly suggest work study to anyone who recieves it as part of their financial aid package! The pay isn't the absolute greatest, but it is well worth the flexibility of having a job on campus, that you picked on the basis of your interests and class schedule. In the long run, it affords you a lot more free time than if you worked a part time job independently. The fact that your employer is understanding of your position as a college student helps a lot too. You'll never be asked to work when you have class, and most are very understanding of your needing to get homework done while you're there. Anyway, my biggest piece of advice is to give work study a try. It may seem like it's not worth it when you're filling out all those tax forms, maybe for the first time yourself. It might seem like a bigger hassle than its worth when you're running around campus turning in applications or going to interviews. Turn everything in as early as you can, so you have the best variety of choices open to you. There is something for everybody, whether your forte is computers, weight lifting, or secretarial duties. Anyway, hang in there during the early parts of the process because you'll be happy you did in the end. Good luck! |
