Gotcha beat... (Reply to this comment)

two (or more) years using Ad-Aware here. I love, love, love it. I got it at the urging of Lockergnome and they've now suggested to augment it with Spybot - Search & Destroy (a similar software). They are both great, but neither catches everything.
Nice review.

it quite as long as you have, but I'm also a big fan of Ad-Aware.

Ad-Aware is a must have (Reply to this comment)

If you are on the internet, especially if connected high-speed, you need this program. It is an absolute necessity and I use it daily to scan my PC for spyware and it finds something daily. Just proves that there are bad people out there causing mischief... great review - thanks! Adam

Very good advice to those out there who may not be so "aware" of spyware. I downloaded this program a few months ago myself, and it has found several spyware programs running. I usually delete everything because I've seen Alexa and Gator, and CyDoor as well. I've had no problems yet, and it seems you enjoy the conveniences the program offers, too.
Great write!

I'm of the mind that if you remove the spyware and disable a program, I didn't need that program to begin with. Since most spyware tags along with freebie programs, it's no problem to reload the program--if you must.
AdAware, like the program I use (Spybot Search and destroy) does remove registry entries it thinks are spyware, and that occasionally disables the program that carried it unto your computer, but I've never had it crash the machine by deleting an essential registry entry. If you worry about that, backup your registry before running AdAware.
Nice Review,
Wayne

Now, I'm kind of computer illiterate. You mention not deleting files unless you're absolutely sure it's safe to do so - do you have any suggestions as to how to go about this? In other words, how do I know it's safe to remove a file? Thanks -
Sue
