Best game ever made? No, but that would be Metroid Prime, Super Metroid lost the title after Primes release. I had thought for the longest time that this gem of a game was one of the best, if not the best game I have ever played. I didnt think many agreed with me until I read a few game magazines top 100 lists. I was not the least bit shocked when I saw Super Metroid right up on top.
First off, this game is gorgeous. Graphically it is one of the better games on the SNES, before RARE brought out its tuned down computer graphics. Gun effects and things of the such are really cool. I would always mix and match my gun upgrades to check out how they looked.
One of the main reasons this game hooked me was its moody, eerie and at times down right scary music. You can play this at night and get a little spooked just from the music. Id have to say this is the best score in any game to date. Its even better than the great scores of games like FF7 and Chrono Trigger.
The addition of tons of new weapons and items over its predecessors blew me away. The X-Ray beam is soooo cool along with the grappling hook. The top-notch controls made all of these things so easy to use.
Who can forget the life ball move where Samus curls up into a ball after a super bomb explosion and regains all of her life? This secret move was cooler looking than useful, but still cool all the same. The game was loaded with neat tricks you could do with different charge beam combinations. This made the adventure that much more unique and fun. Exploring places couldnt have been more exciting, especially since you could reach areas earlier than you were supposed to via wall jumping and bomb jumping. Both of which were hard to accomplish and very rewarding if pulled off successfully. It was a huge triumph the first time you wall jumped with the help of a few creatures.
There is very little bad I can say about this title. Well the only thing bad is the fact that it was a little too easy. It is still a little bit of a challenge to beat it in under 3 hours, but not difficult by any stretch of the imagination if you have played through it once before. I can only get 96% of all items...I refuse to cheat and look up what I have missed in books. I have gotten 100% in the first two games, so I will eventually in this one.
If you own a SNES, you must own this game. If you are a fan of the Metroid series, you must own this game. If you have never played a Metroid game, you must go buy a SNES and play this game. It doesnt get any simpler than that!
