Pros:Interface looks nice, meets basic CD burning needs
Cons:Frustrating to use if you want to do more than make basic CD's
The Bottom Line: Keep looking, there has got to be something better!

It’s hard to not just say ‘Roxio Sucks’ and leave it at that, but I’ll try. I’ve owned 3, 3.5, 4, 5, and now version 6 of this program. I keep upgrading in the hope they’ll get it right one of these days (that and I have a lot of project files I may want to reuse). Version 6 comes the closest yet to being a good program, but with Roxio there’s always something you just hate. In version 6 it’s backward compatibility.

I have quite a few CL4 and CL5 project files. Unfortunately, I can’t import them into version 6. The program tells me I don’t have a license to use the songs. Apparently if you haven’t scanned in the CD’s before hand it doesn’t think you own them. Gee all I wanted to do was see what CD’s I needed to remake the recording.

Unlike previous versions you can finally make a CD compilation off of more than two CD’s if you want. Yes you could do this before but it took a lot of effort and usually a restart of the program. This version lets you keep swapping out CD’s until the image is ready.

You’d think a company like Adaptec that sets the gold standard for SCSI interface cards would be really upset by Roxio ruining their good name, but apparently not. Roxio continues to release buggy, amateurish software. In fact I think they only upgrade the interface on their product and call it a new release. Roxio should strip this program to its bare essentials of a CD recorder and a Sound Editor to focus on getting them right before adding in more features.

Personally I just want to be able to do in the digital age what I did with my LP’s and cassettes. That is, select the tracks off of various albums to make a ‘Best Of’ compilation and maybe edit out intros and such. That’s got to be what 90% of us want to do with a CD burning program. Unfortunately they give us the kitchen sink.

Well at least version 6 doesn’t require an immediate download out of the box to work like version 5 did. And for Roxio that’s something.
