Some people might say sexism is dead - they obviously have not eaten at my house during the summer weeks.

I agree with you 100%, but I'm also a picky rater, and I don't think this essay is what people are looking for when they come to this category to learn about barbecues... sorry!

Unlike you, cooking is not for me. I am bad at it. Really bad. Therefore, my husband's extreme need to bar-b-que gives me the opportunity to avoid cooking, and avoid eating bad food. Its a win-win situation. If only I could convince him to bbq every meal!

Thanks for the great review.

We men are like charcoal briquettes ... all soft and crumbly (Reply to this comment)

Your piece just works on a number of different levels, the way fine humor should ... thanks for a terrific read this morning.

and oh so true! Loved this part, "and he would take over the perilous job of taming those wild flames and try to contain them in the charcoal, just so his lovely wife's skirt doesn't have a chance of getting burnt."

The other thing I'll never understand is guys and fireworks.

I guess being raised in Texas, even though we are known for our grills, I never grilled before (and I am 25)

now I live in Wisconsin and every woman or man knows how to grill/

I ventured out into the grill world the other day and I realized, hey i am not so bad and it may seem sexist but, I would rather have some random guy attempt to mess with gasoline and matches. i am not into fire.

but i can see your point. maybe your stepdad though was using his fears through you, like he was afraid of the fire himself so he would rather see himself get burnt.

or not, i don't know, anyway, good story.
