You don’t have to wait till you experience knocking and significant loss of power to understand your engine needs some cleaning.

While keeping carbon buildup, etc out of your engine is a good idea, and fuel system cleaners can be a good thing, don't forget the old addage "You can have too much of a good thing".

Folks, don't go overboard with these cleaners. Today's vehicles operate based on feedback from oxygen sensors located downstream in the exhaust. These sensors work by measuring fuel mixture across a ceramic block. If too many cleaners are used repeatedly, this will indeed damage this sensor. The result is a car that runs too rich, or worse - too lean. Accelerated carbon buildup, poor mileage and as serious as complete engine failure could follow if this happens.

Also, today's vehicles meet emissions requirements by using a catalyst (catalytic converter) to aid in the dissipation of harmful exhaust fumes. This device is nothing more than a bricklike ceramic substance (coincidence, not related to oxygen sensor) that can get clogged from repeated burning of cleaners in the engine. Also, if the oxygen sensors fail as a result of overuse of cleaners, this can lead indirectly to a clogged catalyst as well. A clogged catalyst will not only hurt performance, but result in a hotter running engine. Fully clogged catalysts will result in an immobile vehicle.

Again, cleaners are good used in moderation, but the best thing to do is use good, quality gasoline, preferably mid-grade so you'll have enough octane, but not so much as to result in excessive carbon buildup sometimes common with consistent use of high octane fuels, your oil changed at regular intervals and don't use gimmicky fuel or oil additives in your car.
