I like chat software. When it comes to chatting online, I tend towards ICQ, but what I'm about to tell you applies to everything including stuff like Yahoo! Chat and Messenger. First off, chat software is a great way to talk to and even, on occasion, make friends. However, I'm a firm believer in physically seeing actual people the majority of the time. Chat software allows real-time communication, which cuts out the waiting game you play when you use e-mail. This means that it's almost like being there. Almost. What I find chat software to be good for is cutting down on distances. If you work for a company where people are scattered across the nation, chat software can work. If you're constantly using a chat program to talk to your next-door neighbor, do yourself a favor and walk next door. You can always use the extra exercise. Like I said, I prefer face-to-face contact. Some chat software, such as mIRC, will allow for file transfer. This is another feature that is great for multi-office businesses. My friends/relatives and I often trade funny programs and interesting pictures. I'd avoid taking anything from a stranger, though. There are some people that can gain access to your computer via chat software. Don't take anything from anyone you don't know. This is the best advice anyone will ever give you on the subject. The last thing I want to say is that you should use chat software sparingly. I only use it at night, which is a time that I don't go outside anyway. This way, I'm not taking away from time I could be outside working or something. In other words, keep up with your life.  |
