No More Tomato Sauce Stains!

Written: Mar 08 '04 (Updated Mar 08 '04)
Pros:Resists stains ... including tomato! Does not leak, clear sides and top for viewing.
Cons:Not a con -- but in the refrigerator, condensation can gather on inside of lid.
The Bottom Line: I'm testing this Rubbermaid container to see if the Bottom Line leaves a stain. Looks good so far!

I have been looking for a food container that truly resists tomato stains. Not only do my old food storage containers show tomato stains but they look terrible when I have company visit. It makes me feel as if the containers, even though I've scrubbed them, are not clean. So when I saw the Rubbermaid Stain Shield bowl with lid in the 1.1 quart size, I grabbed it and couldn't wait to test the product's claim -- "Resists tomato stains!".

What the Container Looks Like

The Rubbermaid Stain Shield 1.1 quart bowl is round. The lid has a snug, but not too tight fit. The center of the lid is clear with a blue plastic rim with a rounded tab for easy opening. The rim is slightly flexible but the center of the lid is solid clear plastic. The bowl itself is constructed from a smooth clear Polycarbonate material with two indentations that serve as handles. If you look closely at the bowl, there is a slight (very slight) blue-gray tint to the clear plastic.

The bowl came with two stickers on it. One long, narrow sticker on the front of the bowl and a UPC sticker on the back of the bowl. Both stickers were easy to peel off and left no residue.

Container Size:

7" diameter bowl (with lid 8" wide including tab)
2 1/4" bowl depth (with lid 2 1/2" tall)

Does it Work?

Yes! This bowl is still clear with no betraying red tint. I primarily use the bowl from table to refrigerator to store leftovers ... such as skillet macaroni in tomato sauce, spaghetti or ravioli. Other items have also found their way into this bowl, such as leftover Chinese food.

This morning, I pulled the Rubbermaid Stain Shield bowl out of the refrigerator to bring some leftover skillet macaroni to work. The first thing I noticed was that I could not see through the lid since it was coated with condensation. However, I could see the food through the clear sides of the bowl. It's great being able to identify food without opening the container. And I don't have to worry about grabbing the wrong container and bringing it to work, which happened one time. Instead of my nice green garden salad, I ended up with a bowl of chicken salad.

It is easy to spoon the contents out of the round container, and always a happy feeling to see the bowl is still clear with no stains.

Rubbermaid claims this bowl is leak proof. Well I couldn't let that claim go unchallenged, so I filled the bowl with water and turned it upside down. Sure enough ... no leaks! There is a rubber seal that prevents spillage.

Even though the bowl can go in the microwave and freezer, I have not used it in either appliance. I have other bowls I prefer to use for microwaving food and for freezer use.

Dislikes

I like this bowl. I can't think of a single dislike. It would be nice if condensation didn't form on the inside of the lid ... but that's being picky.

Cleaning & Care

Even though this bowl is top rack dishwasher safe, I always hand wash my plasticware using Dawn dishwashing liquid and a non-abrasive sponge. This container cleans easily, too. I fill the bowl with water and a squirt of dishwashing liquid then let it soak a few minutes until I wash the dishes. Then ... tada ... it cleans like a dream.

Purchasing

I bought this bowl at my local Walmart for $2.92. Kitchenetc.com sells this bowl for $3.99 and has many other sizes available in the Rubbermaid Stain Shield line.

Summary

The Rubbermaid Stain Shield 1.1 Quart Container is a great addition to my kitchen. This product does resist tomato stains, and it doesn't leak! It's great having a nice container to pull out for leftovers when company visits, too. When blueberry season arrives, I can't wait to fill this Rubbermaid bowl with fresh blueberries, without having to worry about blueberry stains. What a treat!
