Steve,

I like the term you used for '70's music --- "authentic." I agree completely. You also describe my experience with 8-track tapes, too, though I'd forgotten some of the problems --- funny how 8-tracks were promoted as the replacement for cassettes in those days.

Thanks for the kind words, Steve. If only I had that kind of pull at Capitol Records to get their attention for a new CD booklet (I think The Sweet deserve a box set someday).

Sweet on the 8-Track. (Reply to this comment)

Well, I had this album as an LP, but reading the comments here reminded me of the 8-Track players. I'm glad some people have fond memories of these contraptions as I only had problems with them. Let's see, there was the "tape eaten" problem, the "tape melted" problem, the "tape won't move problem", and of course, the "tape won't switch tracks problem." I wasted time and money on these cartridges, but...the music (at least to me) was more authentic then, and Sweet kicked butt on 8-Track, LP, and cassette (did they release that on reel-to-reel too?) back then. So, all the same, like the rest of you, fond memories. But not of those darn 8-Tracks!

Wow, this is one well-informed review chock-full of interesting commentary on this energetic group. I also enjoyed their music a lot, and it was nice to find out more about what they did then, and what has become of them. Almost 20 years ago I gave my Sweet ("Desolation Bouleverard") album to a friend (along with about 200 other albums) when I was making a big move and no longer kept a turntable, and I missed their sound. Well, after reading this review another sale can be rung up for them! Thanks, Don! By the way, why don't you contact the appropriate people and see if your essay can beef up (I refuse to say "sweeten", ha ha) the paltry CD booklet?

And I had finally forgotten that I had an afro back then. Your review caused me to look in the oldie box and pull out the LP and 8 Track... just wish my 8 Track player still worked. I even came across my Average White Band and Angel Lps and tapes.

Now that you have successfully date me (and yourself), let me thank you for an ooutstanding review of one of my favorite albums. And yes, I have this on Cd....and I am playing it as I type...SolidGoldBrass... Now if I can find Give Us a Wink on Disc... LaFeet

I recently heard "Little Willy" used by "The No Spin Zone" and "The O'Reilly Factor" commentator Bill O'Reilly to attempt to call out Mayor Willie Brown of San Francisco. Monkey-esque. Highly unlike "Ballroom Blitz".
And oh by the way, DOH! I always thought "Love Is Like Oxygen" was early ELO. Considering how much I like it, my face is red. Thanks for the edjuma-kayshun.
Did you see Jack Black's "School of Rock"? Up your alley, I'm thinking.
Cheers,
Brett

Awoke this morning and saw you read my Sim City 4 review and decided to read your bio. I saw your Sweet review and got blown away. I was listening to Fox on the Run earlier in the day. Your review in my opinion is the best I ever read and you sure pulled mr back to another time with one of my favorite bands who I knew nothing about. Thanks brother for the education and the excellent excellent review.

AJ,

Thanks for your kindness. Dad can eat, but his eyesight is in bad shape (can't see out of the left eye since the stroke and seems to have some trouble with his right eye, too). He is able to eat a full meal and has a strong appetite, which is an improvement over his initial condition. He has a pretty supportive family and I guess that's the biggest plus right now.

AJ,

I was watching a PBS-TV special this week called "60s Pop Rock" which had some classic artists in it --- Gary Lewis, Mark Lindsay, Peter Noone, Tommy James, The Turtles and many others --- and I was a kid again (I hate those promotional PBS breaks asking for money, though).

That's wonderful news!!! Your dad will continue to be in my prayers, so you tell him to hang in there and not give up on himself.

If there's any way that you can arrange even short LOAs from the nursing home, that will help, too.

If he's like my dad, he would enjoy going on a ride. Unlike my dad, he can probably still eat, so he might like to go out for whatever he's able to still eat.

Can he eat normally? If not, can he eat with one side of his mouth and swallow?

In his case, he might like to take a Navy-themed excursion.

You could also bring things like home movies into the nursing home to show him.

Just a few suggestions.

It's nice that you're talking to him about the different things he has to look forward to. Daddy always enjoyed hearing good and exciting news.

Be sure to keep everyone posted!

Hugs!

Hi jcare,

That's the neat thing about a song --- I identify years in my life by certain songs: having a crush on a girl at 15 and finding The Raspberries' "I Wanna Be With You" fit my mood perfectly!

Thanks, AJ, those comments are a comfort at this time. Dad had a bleeding stroke Jan. 29 which paralyzed his left side. The doctor told me, "If it was me, I'd call the rest of the family because there's a good chance he won't make it through the night." As the oldest son of three children, I spent those early morning hours comforting my mom, reassuring my dad, and contacting my siblings (I had joined mom about 12:30 am at the house to await the ambulance that took Dad to the hospital) and explaining things to my son, who worships his grandad. Anyway, after two weeks he started to show signs of life in his left arm and leg and now he can move both, though walking is still an iffy concept --- but his progress is better and he's in rehab at a nursing home now, so hopefully that will help.

It's hard seeing him like this --- I remember Dad sailing into Newport, R. I., and Norfolk, Va., about U. S. Navy warships, dressed in various uniforms from sailor to Chief Petty Officer, one foot on the railing of the ship and looking cool in sunglasses as the ship returned to port; I'll always remember him that way: strong, cool, calm and inspiring. I hope, God-willing, he can recover fully and return home soon (he's pretty depressed, though, but I've reminded him that he has learned to walk before and that rehab is just another boot camp on the way to recovery; plus he has his grandson's college graduation to look forward to next year and my brother's marriage in October of this year --- things that seem to give him goals to work toward).

Thanks again, AJ.

You & Your Dad In My Prayers! (Reply to this comment)
by AinsleyJo
Don,

I just finished reading your comment over on my tribute to my dad and read about what you've been going through with your own dad. I know how difficult this is for both of you, and you'll both be in my prayers.

My mom and I had some closure this morning when we found out that everything had been done for my dad that could have been.

He was simply found in bed with absolutely no vitals, so it was just a matter of going to sleep for him and waking up in Heaven!

There was no signs of a struggle to catch his breath or anything like that--he had the easy journey that he deserved after all of his struggles.

That doesn't make us miss him any less, but we at least know that everything was done for him that could have been done, but his passing was a rapture of a saint "in the twinkling of an eye."

Love,
AJ :o)

Although it had slipped my mind until you mentioned it, I remember the Little Willie song. It was cute. Always reminded me of something that Ohio Express might do.

Great to see you back again, because I was starting to get worried about you!

I was trying to remember the name of this band recently. My brother had the album and with the commercial on TV that plays Ballroom Blitz it was just killing me to think of the name of the band. So thank you! I was almost ready to do a Google search just so I could figure it out. Old age creeping up on me I guess!
Great review as always,
