Only buy an extended warranty if you enjoy feeding the coffers of the chain store or insurance company offering the warranty.

Automobiles: I almost ALWAYS recommend buying extended warranties for General Motors (trucks, GMC, Grand Am), Ford and Chrysler (especially Jeep) vehicles.

For imports I have had great experiences with Honda, Toyota and BMW. Never had a problem with these cars.

Cameras/Camcorders: Buy only manufacturer extended warranties.

Except Consumer Reports recommended extended
warranties on camcorders ONLY which turned
out to be a good thing for me since mine was
perpetually broken. We don't buy them on
anything else.
