Very cool, essential for professional presenters

Written: Mar 10 '04
Pros:Small. Long range. Ergonomic, Built-in laser pointer. very good value. Professional quality
Cons:None.
The Bottom Line: Essential equipment for a professional (or even amateur) presenter of anything. If you stand in front of a screen, talk to people, and use PowerPoint, buy it!

I have used a bunch of presentation mice and pointing devices (incl Logitech Trackman and Gyro). This is the best. It is quite small and has a very effective range. I have controlled a presentation from the other side of a large ballroom, probably 80-100' away with no problems. Here's the skinny:

PROS: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+ SIZE is quite small, around 5" long and an inch or so wide. Tucks into pocket or you can hang it on your shirt pocket with its integral hook
+ BUTTONS are very logical. Especially the side wheel for up-down slide in PowerPoint. This is what I use most of the time. Also has a joystick button for mouse position and left-right buttons for mouse operation. Plus one for the laser
+ LASER pointer is built in. This is VERY helpful
+ USB. Just plug the little USB receiver in and away you go. No driver to install, no software to install and get working, no separate power unit, 100% compatible, VERY cool.
+ BATTERY. I've had mine for nearly two years and only on my second set, and I talk a LOT (trust me)
+ LEATHERETTE POUCH. It comes with nice little pouch for the pointer and USB receiver.
+ WIRELESS RANGE is VERY good. Unless there's a lot of equipment neary it operates pretty much as far as you can reasonable see a presentation.

CONS: -----------------------------------
Very few, mostly niggles:
- LASER POWER-DOWN. You have to switch on the laser pointer after not using it for a while. If you do not use the laser for a while (I think 20 minutes), it powers down and has to be reset. It's a little bothersome in the middle of a presentation, but it does save the battery.
- WATCH BATTERIES. It does not use AAAs (which the Logitech Trackman does), but a species of watch battery. They're not hard to find at all, but not as readily available as AAAs. Still that makes it much smaller, so it's really a plus.

I did have a funny CON with one presentation where my slides kept transitioning apparently at random. I found that someone one floor down and a couple of rooms across was using an identical mouse. I was changing his slides and he was changing mine. That range thing does have a drawback.
