| sweetcece's Full Review: Gateway Select 800 Deluxe |
Our organization currently uses a Gateway Select 800 Deluxe workstation for a kiosk serving the public for processing data for forms for new filings of cases. The project manager for the kiosk project purchased this computer for that reason specifically. However, the computer is actually way too aclaimated for this type of project.
Essentially the main drawing parts that would attract customers and users to purchase this unit are completely unused for our purposes. The Boston Acoustics BA735 Digital Speakers w/Subwoofer are not even attached to this unit which makes the fact that the computer has SoundBlaster Live! Value with Digital Audio Output moot. If we had attached the speakers or implemented audio capability with our kiosk, it would have been nice, but the speakers would have eventually walked out of the building too since this computer is in a public area unsecured on a desktop.
We have also disabled the 12X/40X DVD-ROM Drive and diskette drive where no one could add any programs or viruses into the computer and have installed Foolproof software on the workstation to prevent tampering. In addition to this, very little of the 30GB 7200RPM Ultra ATA66 hard drive is being used at the present time and will likely never be used.
Although many of the features of our the Gateway Select 800 Deluxe workstation are not in use, the system does get a rather good workout from the public. Usually about 25 different individuals use this computer every day and even though we've had so much diversity, no problems have ever arisen with this one particular unit.
Even though this is a desktop computer that I would LOVE to have bought for my own personal use, I don't believe that the computer has any true relevant workstation use unless you have extensive data files and need to have sound capability. Having a Read/Write CDROM drive would be more beneficial for my purposes than the DVD drive.
Overall, I do like the functionality of the Gateway Select 800 Deluxe computer. However at this point in time, its main features are being completely covered up by its current use.
Note: During the Epinions server migration, this epinion was not linked to the proper product. I have now moved it to the proper place. Thank you for any ratings.
