Significance of the Ramones

The Bottom Line One of the greatest bands in history. The loss of Joey is tragic.

First off, I know this is the wrong place for this opinion, but there is no other place to put it.

The Ramones created a style of music which to many is a life blood. Punk Rock started at CBGB's in New York when Dee Dee called out his first, "One, two, three, four". For 22 years, the Ramones made great records that went to show that musical talent was not necessary. All you need is heart.

Well when Joey Ramone died last Sunday I was obviously distraught over what is an enormous loss to the community (despite Joey's relative obscurity in recent years). Something else bothered me though. I realized shortly there after that the media coverage on Joey's death was eating me up. A band that never had a top forty record (or even a top forty song) is getting all of this coverage when their singer dies. The Ramones, and punk rock in general, have always been an underground phenomenon. Confusing record executives and nipping at the heels of success. People hardly paid any attention to the Ramones when they were around, and now, they are in the spotlight. Isn't the death of one of the band members a high price to pay for success?
Don't get me wrong, Joey Ramone deserves every minute of TV time and every piece of print that is written now, even if it is just a facade. I know staff writers for magazines don't care that he is dead. Well, I know I care. And I know every kid who has ever gone to a punk show or even just heard a Ramones record is upset. This is a type of music which prides itself in being honest, and straight-forward. Wouldn't it have just been nicer to have the small blurb in the paper rather than the full page spread? I know I sound like some stupid poser hunter, but a man that received so little recognition when he was around should be laid to rest that way. It is not fair to start shooting his name around now that he is not around to here it. Infact not only is it unfair, but it is insulting to the people who actually care and know that the Ramones were meant to be a hidden token for those who had openminds to find.
