If you have facial hair, go with disposables, but if you HAVE to have an electric, read this article.

My experience has been totally the opposite of yours.

1) I have found my Braun Flex Control (one of the first to come on the market) to be a much less irritating shave than the Sensor Excel or Mach III that I've variously used over the almost 10 years I've owned that shaver. I'm a pale-skinned red head with (relatively) sensitive skin (though it's thicken-up over the years.)

2) Just so we're clear: your implication that "real" facial hair = coarse and/or thick facial hair is bogus. You may or may not know that red hair follicles are a fraction of the diameter of other hair colours, and that red heads have far fewer hairs per square inch than other colours. For me, an electric shaver is perfectly suited to my hair type (though still irritating at times.) I can assure you that I have a well-grown-in and thick goatee and side-burns, yet my electric razor is a less irritating shave for me than any blade I've used thusfar (mainly on the neck where you have to contend with hair growing at odd angles. Most of my problems using any shaving method stem from neck sensitivity.) So does my masculinity still rate even though I don't have "thick and coarse" manly man hair? ,;-)

3) In my experience, a blade shave takes at least 3 times as long as an equally close electric shave. With a blade, you have to lather-up, be ultra-careful with the blade, and then clean-up. With a shaver, you're in and out in a fraction of the time.

4) If I shave with a blade, I have to go in with the electric and clean-up my goatee and side burns. I have to say I'm more than a little perplexed at how your experience could be the exact opposite as you say, but to each his own, right?

I will agree that Braun makes exceptionally high-quality products, and not just in terms of shavers. I've had my Flex Control for about a decade now. I was the original incarnation, far better quality than later models I feel, I paid like $175 for it back in '91 I think. The rechargeable battery had to be replaced for $50 a recently, which is not bad considering how old it is.

I have yet to find a close shave that doesn't irritate my skin at least in part. Not good.
