Shopping at Amazon is so easy. I like the gift certificates my kids get for me, and even the ones I give to them. We can all pick out our own books. I have never had to return a book and they always arrived it great condition.

Amazon is my friend. (Reply to this comment)

I used to try very hard to support the local bookstores. Initially it was to fight the incursion of the Barnes & Noble/Starbucks that were swallowing up all the neighborhood stores. Well, that didn't matter because not enough people seemed to care and the mom & pop shops closed up.
Then it was to support them despite the growing presence of Amazon and B&N Online (which is a false bargain once you pay taxes and shipping).
I love Amazon for all the reasons you do. All of them. Then I loved them for the most selfish of reasons. Amazon stopped carrying Our Common Ground, the photo essay I authored because of declining sales. Suddenly, because of an apparent surge in interest, they put it back on their site. I love that.
Well, as usual a wonderful review and a pleasure to read. Maybe we should team up on my next project.

Off the book topic - (Reply to this comment)

I must agree with the customer service aspect - when a shipment of my never arrived they traced it and found that it had been left at the door - they sent out another shipment 2nd day air at no extra charge. They have great customer service! Did you happen to catch the great book clearance they had a month or so ago? Great review.

Small stores could compete with excellent customer service - it just isn't out there like it used to be.
I would be happy to pay more and wait longer for something if they were just nicer to me!

Amazon is more convenient and more price effective. But realizing that these small
bookstores cannot compete at all levels
with an amazon...most seem to become niche
specific...take for example children's books
they are very popular, sold very quickly...
neighborhood bookstores have to change with
a very challenging environment. I do miss
the rapport with one bookstore owner ...
he had an immense knowledge base..showed
great personal attention..referred me to
books he had read which would intrigue me.
But those days are being passed...and I view
this with a great deal of sadness.

Me too (Reply to this comment)

I too buy almost all my books at Amazon.com. You were right on point about the inconsistent service and attitudes one has to put up with in stores. And not giving you 10% off when they were on the shelf at that price was just bad business practice. The typical small bookstore is an anachronism. They're inefficient, and most will soon go the way of buggy whip manufacturers.
