What finally got rid of my adult acne

The Bottom Line If other acne treatments have failed you, you may want to give a glycolic-acid based line a try.

I have never had great skin. But all of a sudden, at the age of 25, my acne started getting much worse. As any adult with acne knows, it can be very embarassing and really hurt your self confidence. After trying just about every treatment out there, I have finally found something that works for me. Hurray! Let me share my experiences...

What DIDN'T work

-- Over the Counter acne products. I've probably tried 'em all. Benzoyl Peroxide products, salicylic acid products, etc. None of the drugstore products did much at all for my acne. Plain and simple, enough said.

-- The Dermatologist. I went to a dermatologist for about a year. In addition to a couple of topical medications, he prescribed antibiotics (a common treatment for moderate cases of acne). I did have some initial success with minocycline- when I was taking high doses. My skin wasn't totally clear, but it was a lot better. Every time we tried lowering my dose of antibiotics, my acne flared up again. Long term use of minocycline can cause liver damage, so I wasn't willing to continue taking high doses of it. Aside from the fact that antibiotics are not targeted at any specific bacteria in your body, so they also kill lots of "good" bacteria (in your digestive system and reproductive tract (for women) in particular). The results I got from the antibiotics just weren't good enough to offset the negative effects.

Finally, something that worked for me!!!
I was browsing over on Ivillage's message boards and came across a message board dedicated to acne. (if you're interested, go to www.allhealth.com/allhealth/boards and click on "Acne and Rosacea"). There were quite a few members raving about a line of products called "Serious Skin Care" that had supposedly really helped their acne. At first I figured they were just resellers for the product (how many times have you all seen people promoting products they sell on message boards). But once I read further, I realized that this line of skincare is only sold via the Home Shopping Network. Admittedly, buying something that is sold on HSN scared me too- products sold on TV don't exactly have a great reputation. But these women were really raving about how great they were, so I decided to try them.

The key is glycolic acid. The Serious Skin Care (SSC from now on) line of acne treatment products contains high levels of glycolic acid, which is a member of the Alpha Hydroxy Acid family. Glycolic acid effectively promotes your skin to shed itself quicker. If your skin cells do not shed quickly enough, they block your pores, trap in all the "gunk" and cause acne.

Within a week of using the glycolic acid products, I was already noticing major results. Within a month, my skin was almost perfectly clear. Before using these products, I had a forehead full of acne. I am now to the point where I am averaging 1 zit a month. Other than that, my skin is perfect. The glycoic acid has also gotten rid of the blackheads on my nose.

The SSC line of glycolic acid products consists of several things. My favorite is their glycolic cleanser- it was the first product I bought and got results from it alone. They also have a toner, moisturizer, and a glycolic mask. It is, in fact, a full skincare line- go to www.hsn.com for more information.

There are plenty of other skincare lines out there that make manufacture glycolic acid treatments. Not having used them, I can not vouch for their effectiveness. If you do decide to try another line of products, just make sure they aren't just adding a trivial amount of glycolic acid in just to say they have it in there. Many lines will list the percentages. If not, a decent test is this- if you put the product on your skin and it DOESN'T tingle or even burn a bit, it probably doesn't contain enough acid.

My recommendation
If you are like me and don't respond well to "traditional" acne treatments, I strongly urge you to give glycolic acid treaments a try. For me, it's been nothing short of a miracle. If you'd like more advice from people who have had success with this, go over to the Ivillage message board (www.allhealth.com/allhealth/boards - click on Acne). Everyone who hangs out there is very friendly and helpful. Good luck!
