I just bought this printer yesterday,3/11/04. Bought it at Fry's as a refurbished for $130. Also got Fry's 5yr warranty for an extra $40. Total approx $180 for a printer that was $600 2 yrs back. Was abit concerned that the printer has been discontinued by HP but decided to give it a go. Got it home and unwrapped it and set it up according to the instructions, loaded the software onto my laptop running Win XP, got an error telling me that the software was not windows tested, hit continue anyway, no other problems until I tried to connect to it. I'm using the parallel port in the back instead of the USB port. Printer hung up while initializing and had to pull the cable and power and reconnect the power to get it started up. Now I had a printer ready to go but not connected to a computer, tried making copies worked great.
The fun part started when I connected it to my laptop and rebooted, the computer recognized the printer, loaded the driver and told me everything was fine. Tried to print something, got an error in the connection. Uninstalled the drivers, reinstalled them, same thing, did it twice more until I got fed up and went to bed. Next day visited HP web site downloaded the correct driver/program, loaded it up(20 mins) and now it works fine.
If you get this printer don't load the software from the disk just go to HP's web site and download the driver from there. Copying is awesome, double sided, colour, B&W,mirror, enlargement, reduction etc with auto feeder, printing is fast, double sided, labels etc no problems so far. Printer has 2 trays, have defaulted to the bottom for general printing, using the top for special photos, labels etc printing. Tried the scanner once it seems to work ok so far.
4 stars because of the software setup, and worried about ink usage, will up date this review when the ink cartridge runs out.
