| kc10driver's Full Review: Microsoft Broadband Networking MN-700 Wireless-G B... |
I've got average to slightly above average computer software savvy, though very little hardware know-how. I've never set up any kind of network before, though I have used a wireless net at work. I'm running Windows 98SE on my desktop and Windows XP on my notebook. I also bought a Microsoft MN-720 wireless-G notebook adapter. My internet service is via cable modem. Installing the hardware took maybe five minutes. The software for both computers took me about 20 minutes. The step-by-step installation was very simple. Everything worked perfectly the first time I tried to use it. The router sits in my basement office. I've used the laptop on both the first and second floors of the house, up to about 50 feet away, and four or five walls from the router. Average transmittal speeds on the first floor hover around 54 Mbps. As I get up to the second floor, on the opposite side of the house from the router, it drops to around 38 Mbps. All-in-all, blazingly fast, though I do get occasional interference when someone in the house is using our 2.4 GHz portable phones. (But I hear that's a problem common to most 802.11g wireless routers because of their operating frequencies.) Overall I'm very satisfied with the purchase.
