First-Hand Experience is Always the BestApr 18 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line The top ten list is as close as you can get!! After touring Ohio and the East Coast, I have composed a top ten list for what to do when college shopping. Just to let you know, I have toured small colleges like Otterbein, John Carroll, Cedarville, and Baldwin-Wallace, so here is the top ten list for college shopping. #10 Call at least three months in advance, this way you are assured of getting a hotel room that is very close to the college. Also, make sure it is close to the college that you are visiting that day, not one that you visited the previous day. That way, you can just drive for 15 minutes or so and not be extremely tired from driving. #9 Take tennis shoes for the entire trip. You WILL be doing a great deal of walking, and if you are on a large campus, those Doc Martens will not do the job. Walking is a must on the campus to see everything. #8 Try to get your tour appointment around 9 or 10 AM. That way, you can take a tour, meet with the admissions counselor, eat lunch, do the whole experience. You can spend the whole day there, and to top it off for another extra, you can spend the evening touring and experiencing the surrounding city. #7 Bring your transcript. This might sound obvious to any observer, but without it, you can just list your GPA. The admissions counselor does not know the strength (or weakness) of your schedule. IF you have a weak schedule, you might not want to bring it, but if you are seriously visiting a college, you must have a pretty good college prep course. #6 Bring the family. If everybody comes to the college, it gives everybody affiliated with it a favorable view of everyone. Now I'm not suggesting that you pack in 20 people, but if you are driving in the normal car, just try to fill it so the visit looks like a family affair. #5 Dress nicely when you are there. Not to say suit and tie, but a nice shirt with a collar from a store like J. Crew, Banana Republic, GAP, or Marshall Fields. Don't dress in your Target T-shirt and those jeans with a hole in them and remember to bring those tennis shoes. #4 Meet with a professor and sit in a class, obviously within your desired major. This way, you get a real college experience and even more importantly, you get a leg-up on the department scholarships that over the long run can even help up to 15% with tuition. #3 Make sure you get a student tour guide. They know what it is like to be a prospective student, they know what you want to see, they know what college life is like, and they know where to go to have a great time. #2 STAY OVERNIGHT!! Many colleges allow this as for already accepted seniors. Take advantage of this, it will be the closest thing to the real thing. There will be no parents and it will best imitate life for the following fall semester. #1 JUST HAVE FUN! College is the greatest time in a person's life and not having fun on a visit will just facilitate not having fun in college. You will have enough memories in one year to last you a lifetime and there will be FOUR years! Hope this top ten list was a great aide for prospective students, if you want further help and are going to Otterbein College, just look for me! |
