| namja's Full Review: Griffin Technology ITRIP FM TRANSMITTER FOR NEW (4... |
WHAT IT DOES
The iTrip was the first accessory that I purchased for my iPod. It sends the audio via FM signal from the iPod to any FM radio within a few feet. This is ideal to be used in the car so that you can listen to your iPod on the car stereo without having to get a cassette adapter or a hard line connection. You can also use it at home with your home stereo system. Unlike many of the other FM transmitters that only give you 4-5 choices of FM stations to choose from, the iTrip lets you choose from ALL of the available FM stations.
HOW IT LOOKS
This is a really neat looking device. It sits atop the iPod and plugs into the headphone/remote jacks. It has a little red LED light. It is pretty like how the iPod is pretty; it matches the iPod so well that it looks as though Apple made the product (it is made by a third party company called Griffin Technology).
SETUP & USAGE
Initially, the iTrip requires installation. You need to install the software on your computer using the included CD, or you can download the latest software from the Griffin Technology web site to install on your computer. Then on your next sync of the iPod to your computer, the software will install onto the iPod. Changing the FM station to use can be a little tricky, so be sure to save the manual. If you lose the manual, you can also download this from the manufacturer's web site: www.griffintechnology.com
PERFORMANCE
The performance is by far the most important thing when it comes to this device. If you can find a free channel, then this works very well. "Free" means a station that no one is using nearby, so that when you tune your radio to it, you just hear a very quiet hiss and no garbled talking or music. In metropolitan areas, almost every available FM channel will have some static on it, which means that you might not get a clean signal in your car from the iPod. I live in the greater Los Angeles area, and I find myself changing the station every now and then for better performance. It's a good thing that the iTrip gives you the whole spectrum of stations to choose from and not just a few like the other FM transmitters. The iTrip does not require batteries or external power as it draws a tiny amount of power from the iPod through the remote jack (next to the headphone jack). A cassette adapter will give you a more reliable performance, but nothing beats the convenience and the cool factor of the iTrip.
