Custom Building vs. Buying (Reply to this comment)
by vicwang
Thanks for sharing your experience, which surely isn't unusual for those who aren't familiar with the complications that can happen when building a PC. However, it's not just self-built systems that can have inadquate power supplies. For many years (and presumably still today) many vendors, including "name brand" vendors (ex. Compaq) have sold incredibly weak power supplies with their systems. I've heard of some systems coming with 130 watt power supplies, when the "standard" these days is at least 250, preferrably 300+. And with a power supply that weak, just adding a more powerful graphics card can be enough to bring the system down completely.
Anyway, my advice is to be wary of second-rate parts in any system, no matter the source. Power supplies would happen to be a prime example, since most companies don't even TELL you what kind of power supply is included. When custom-building your own system, at least you can ensure that the power supply (and all other components as well) are of the highest possible quality.
Good review,

Even though I work with computer hardware and software all day long, I would NEVER try to put a computer together on my own.

Although my husband hasn't yet decided to build his own computer, he's tackled almost every other project in the house. No offense, but I won't show this review to him--don't want to give him ideas!
However, it is a great review and talks about the perils of doing-it-yourself. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for your informative review and warning.
I will take it into serious consideration if I
think about a "home-made" system. Excellent!
