Re: Handling (Reply to this comment)

Well, about that manual transmission... it's not as though the shifter was actually difficult or obtrusive in operation. I got the gear I wanted every time, so in that sense, the Forenza's transmission is fine.
But in my review, I was judging the Forenza's transmission by a different standard. I test-drove the Forenza at about the same time I test-drove a Mazda3, and several other small cars. Some of these cars have really great, sports-coupe-quality shifters, so I was judging the Forenza's by the standards of the best in the class. While the Forenza's worked okay, I thought it was way behind those of its sportiest rivals.
Compared to a Ranger, S-10, and Tercel, (I've driven the Ranger and Tercel) the Forenza's shifter is certainly more than adequate. And those are all good cars, but--hopefully I'm being tactful here--they aren't renowned for having sporty, precise shifters. I think we're just measuring by a different yardstick. That's fair, right?
You might be right, too, that the car I drove had some issues. Or maybe it hadn't been warmed up yet that day, and was shifting more stiffly and uncooperatively as a result.
Above all, things like shifter feel are always at least partly subjective. Handling too. I'm a bit of a performance nut, so I'm really picky about a car feeling tied-down and responsive when driven briskly, which shows in all my other reviews too--the Forenza is fine for the way most people drive day-to-day. I guess the fact is, anything involving "feel" is going to be highly dependent on the individual, so maybe we just have different tastes? Who knows. In any case, thanks very much for taking the time to read and comment on my review. Good luck with your new Forenza!

Handling (Reply to this comment)

I recently purchased a Suzuki Forenza S and, while I agree with you on the mushy brakes, I believe the difficulty in the manual clutch may have been an anomaly of the test car.
I have driven manual transmissions exclusively and I find the Forenza to be 'top notch' -- far better than the Ford Ranger I also own, and near equally responsive as my previous Toyota Tercel or Chevy S-10.
It's only been one week, but I am more than satisfied with this car's handling.

Good points. I'll try to get an update in once I'm finished with the reviews of the Scions I drove this week.

Daewoo origins (Reply to this comment)
by mkaresh, in Cars & Motorsports
You might want to state in your introduction that this is a rebadged Daewoo, and not a Suzuki-engineered product. At first I didn't think you were aware of this, as you somehow expected Aerio-like handling, then saw the bit about the Nubira near the end.
Other than this, excellent review. One area you might consider addressing in later reviews is the amount of lateral support provided by the driver's seat. This varies greatly from car to car, and matters for buyers (hey, I sometimes actually buy a car) like myself.

Your reviews are good... (Reply to this comment)

...but you should try and split up the paragraphs a little more. It gets a little difficult at times to read through those big blocks of text. Otherwise, I enjoy reading your reviews.
