| msmorvay's Full Review: Gold Toe® Cotton/Nylon Athletic Quarter Socks |
When I received the invitation from Mimi to participate in the 2nd Annual Underwear write off, I immediately thought about last year and how much trouble I had finding something to write about. I finally settled on the Playtex® 18 Hour Adjustable Comfort Strap 128-9903Q. If you would like to read that review you can go to: http://www.epinions.com/content_97944899204
This year was not any easier. When it comes to underwear I guess I am just a basic kind of gal. I like my Hanes Her Way, and I just have not come across them on Epinions unfortunately. I did recently buy a pretty new bra by Vassarett, but unfortunately that was not here either, so searching I went. Finally I came upon Gold Toe. What is Gold Toe you ask? Well it is a brand of Socks. And although I am not the wearer of Gold Toe socks, I can proudly say I am a purchaser of them. This is one of the brands of socks that I regularly purchase for my husband.
Is There Really a Gold Toe?
Why yes there is. Well it is more of a dark yellow but I am not going to be to literal here. And no silly it is not made of gold. The gold toe portion of the sock is simply threads that are of a gold color and are at the tippy toe part of the sock. If you would like a better view of what these look like you can go to:

What Does the Gold Toe Represent?
Why golden opportunity of course. You see during the depression there was a need for more durable long lasting mens hosiery. Two German immigrants founded a small mill in Pennsylvania (Great American Knitting Mills) where they began to produce quality socks. So it was simple Economics:
Consumers need for quality socks + Great American Knitting Mills filling that need = Golden Opportunity.
So as you can see these socks have been being produced for many, many years and when most people who are aware of the brand think gold toe, they think quality. Gold toe started manufacturing socks for women and children in more recent years.
(The above information was gathered from the Gold Toe web site the wording was all mine though.)
Kinds of Gold Toes
Gold Toe makes all kind of socks. They make them for men, women, and children. They also make support hose. For simplicity purposes I will stick to mens socks. Gold Toe makes: Dress Socks, Casual Socks, athletic socks, and socks for big and tall men. All of them have gold toes.
The Athletic Quarter Sock
Now that I have told you a bit about the history of Gold toe and what they produce, lets get down to what this review is actually about: the Gold Toe Athletic Quarter Sock. The Athletic Quarter Sock is a white sock made of 80% combed cotton and 20% Nylon. It has of course the trade mark gold toe. The sock comes up to just over the ankle.
These are good socks for racket sports such as tennis. These are also good for every day ware in the summer time to be worn with shorts. They are also a good sock choice while doing weight lifting. They are not the type of athletic sock you would wear for sports such as base ball, or football for those sports you would want a sock that goes higher up the calve.
They are sold at many of the finer retail stores but I have mainly purchased them at JC Penny. They are a tiny bit on the more expensive side for athletic socks, but they are good quality socks that seem to last a bit longer than other competing brands. They also seem a bit thicker and softer to me. If you buy them at one of the higher end retailers you can expect to pay $18.00 for a pack of 6. But if you look around you can find them much cheaper, but still on average about 2 to 3 dollars more than other popular brands. I like to wait till they are on sale, then I will buy a couple of packages. If they are not on sale when the need for more socks arises, my cheaper side will take over and I will buy a less expensive brand.
Personal Thoughts
I have been buying Gold Toe socks for my husband on and off for several years. My husband likes how the Gold Toe socks feel on his feet. He also likes to where them when he plays tennis and works out because he finds that they are very absorbent and help his feet stay drier and more comfortable.
I like the Gold Toe socks because they tend to stay whiter longer, and the gold toe makes it easy for me to match them up. I also like that they are extremely durable and last for a long time. My husband is rough on his athletic socks, and I know long after the other socks in his drawer are thrown out from ware, that the Gold Toe socks will still be there.
There are only a couple of minor problems with them. They seem to be a bit smaller than other brands of the same type of sock. This is not a problem for my husband because he does not have very big feet, but this may be a problem for those with larger feet. Of course they do make socks for big and tall men as well. The other problem is of course that they cost a bit more than other socks of the same type. Not a whole lot more, on average only a couple of dollars more per package of 6. The cost can of course be justified though because they more durable.
Recommendation
I do recommend Gold Toe socks, both for the quality and durability. My husband says he would recommend them because they are comfortable (yes I did ask for his in-put).
