Pros: Amazing interior room and versatility, unique styling, Toyota quality, eager and exuberant road manners.
Cons: Stiff ride, height feels awkward in hard driving, out of its element on freeways.

Re: i picked a PT cruiser over a scion xB (Reply to this comment)

I've never driven an xB with an automatic, but wouldn't be surprised if it sapped much of the vehicle's power. That's pretty common in torque-poor economy cars. I only driven the xB and PT with manuals, however.

As for the xB picture, I don't get to pick the photo Epinions provides. If I could change it, I would. That said, the one in the picture doesn't look tricked-out to me. It's got tinted windows, as in most factory-provided shots, but the wheels are the standard 14" plastic ones.

The Scion dealerships I've visited have been great, but my experience may be different because I live in California. There are lots of Scion dealers here, so they don't have the leverage to deny customers demo cars.

A friend of mine did have a really bad experience with a Scion dealer, though--she said she wanted to sell her old car privately, rather than trade it in, and the guy started telling her an anecdote about someone who got murdered selling his car on the street. Extremely slimy.

Glad you found a car you liked. Good luck with your new PT!

i picked a PT cruiser over a scion xB (Reply to this comment)
by godlessamerica
i test drove both last weekend, and found the xB to be quite the slower of the 2 (with an automatic). the PT cruiser had the base 150 hp engine in it.

even my wife, who is not car savvy, said immediately (of the xB) "when you press on the gas nothing happens"

the xB engine was quieter and more refined, but the base xB doesn't look all that cool without low profile tires and other appearance upgrades, so pricing it at $13,800 in your review with a picture of a tricked out version may be misleading to some readers

we bought the PT cruiser well equipped at $17,500 . . . including cruise control, which is unavailable on the xB at any price.

(footnote: the scion salesmen are going for the saturn "no hassle price" effect. however, most scion dealerships don't have a demonstrator xB in stock to drive, and they ask you to order one without driving it . .. perhaps this is what's leading to the several used xB's showing up suddenly in used car lots. also, the scion salesmen say things like "my friend had a PT cruiser, and the timing chain went 2,000 miles after warranty . . . it cost thousands to fix it". they don't really get the "no pressure" sales concept, imho)

I've very impressed with the several reviews I've read by you in a single day's worth of posting. I know that this represents work that you've done over some time but it is still an impressive chunk of work.

Thank you for your continued effort to provide quality reviews. A lot of readers will be interested in what you've said about these cars.

Well, it's not that the Scion's ride bothered me personally all that much... it was just probably stiffer than most buyers would prefer.

Yeah, it sure is nice to be in California at the moment, the availability on Scions is awesome. Thanks for reading my review---

My dealer only had automatics. A shame, since a small car is always more fun with a manual. I'll have to manage another test drive once Scions become officially available here.

I didn't mind the xB's ride so much. Maybe it's because I've become used to the firm, somewhat busy ride of my Protege5, so a car's ride must be truly awful for me to mind it. As it was, I found the ride somewhat busy, with a moderate amount of bobbing back and forth, but rarely harsh.
