Bass-ic Instinct

Apr 20 '01

The Bottom Line Stereo sub is the best way to go!

Based on experience, I first checked the spec of the sub on prospect. Do take note that subs should be able to reproduce bass contents from 40Hz down to 20Hz. Also, take note that a more capable (i.e. reaching down to the twenties) subwoofer will cost more than an average sub. My next priority was the size. Some subs might be offending just by its size alone, therefore, check the dimensions of the sub. If a large cabinet/baffle is not a problem to you, go on ang get one. However, take note that it might give you some problem initially when setting up your sub in your room. The room size should also be noted. It might be very difficult to tame even a very good sub in a small room. Then try to decide the main application the sub will be used. IMHO, Music and Home Theater are different and a sub that is well made for music might not be very appealing on an HT setup and vice versa. So, decide before going to the audition. Also, don't audition 3 or more subs (or speakers) within a day as this will be confusing. Minimize your list by omitting those that do not meet your criteria. Lastly, familiarize yourself with a favourite music and/or movie piece that has deep bass contents. Then audition the sub(s) with these materials. Good subs should blend well with the main speakers. It shouldn't sound boomy and you shouldn't be able to identify its location in the room. A good sub should be 'invisible' just like a good set of main speakers. Take note of the position of the sub during audition. Subs are more 'bass-heavy' when placed on a corner as opposed to the center of the room. Start with brands that have good history with the subwoofer industry such as REL, VELODYNE, BAG-END, PARADIGM and HSU to name a few. Finally, let your ears decide =)
