Don't forget the West Coast. (Reply to this comment)
by tomjasper
Tom, as a So Cal native you must know that all the best things come from the West Coast. The same is true in Australia!
I was recently visiting my retired parents in Perth, Western Australia - and had a chance to taste some of the local produce. Which is in my opinion is under-rated.
The Margaret river area is well known especially for its great whites. The rest of the South West also produces some great drops.
However one of the real up-and-coming areas, especially for reds (shiraz in particular) is the Bickley Valley. Its just 30 mins East of Perth so I found it rather convenient for a day trip (cf Margret River 3 hrs). There are some great little vineyards out there like: Piesse Brook, Cosham's and Swarbrick.
In my opinion the Shiraz's rival the South Australians (Penfolds etc). The Swarbrick Shiraz is the next Grange for me!
I don't think any of the small wineries would sell in Ralphs/Vons etc. But there is probably a small store so-where in So-Cal that imports. If anyone finds me I would certainly like to know! Until I will have to ration out the one case of Swarbricks Shiraz that I bought back with me on the plane. Though I have managed to find their website (http://www.specialtyingredients.com.au/swarbs.htm) so maybe they mail-order.
Hope that helps the Australian wine lovers out there.
Happy Drinking!

Did you know? (Reply to this comment)

On a recent business trip to Taiwan, I sat next to a delightfully pretty Aussie woman. The wine in business class was a Lindeman's Shiraz. I thought it was terrific.
The woman chuckled a bit and informed me that Lindeman's was the "Gallo" of Australia. I commented that I wish Gallo could do so well for so little.
Makes me want to tour Australia's wine country and find the real gems.

Thanks Alex!
I have been checking your account every other day, waiting for your next review. Sure hope to see more from you. Seems like a lot of wine writers have given up since Leah's exit.
Thank you very much for your kind words.

Good Aussie Wine is Nothing New (Reply to this comment)
by Nathanael73
Australians have been making great wine for about a century now. It is only in recent years that we have received the international recognition and market share we deserve. My father grew up in the McLaren Vale, where my Great-Grandfather owned a vineyard, before he sold it to Hardy's, who have grown and grown. One of my great-uncle's worked for Hardy's for over fifty years.
I would recommend that you try some of the following brands: Brown Brothers, Jameson's Run, Black Opal, Wolf Blass, and Jacob's Creek. Jameson's Run makes a fantastic Cabernet Sauvignon, while Brown Brothers make great dessert wines, such as the Spatlezie Lexia (sp?).
Cheers,
Nat
