Don't throw out the bucket, just put it away...

Written: Mar 25 '04 (Updated Mar 29 '04)
Pros:Easy to use, no buckets to lug around.
Cons:Changing out the pads can be messy.
The Bottom Line: This is a great thing to have around the house for daily light cleaning, but you will want to keep your bucket around for those deep cleaning days.

Yes, I realize that there have been many reviews written on this already and yes I know I'm late. But the fact is that I just got my little handy dandy don't need no bucket to mop my floor mop! I kept looking at them on the shelf at the store and thinking, 'That looks handy...' and then looking at the price tag and thinking, 'Not that handy...' What finally convinced me to fork out the $20 bucks? I tried it at my Granny's house. Now, Granny isn't one to try new gadgets. She is well into her 80's and would just as well have her young, energetic grandkids come over and scrub the floor on their hands and knees.

So one day when I was at her house, and my knees were getting a little sore, I asked her, 'Granny, have you tried this Swiffer Mop thing in your closet?'
'Nah, your uncle Mike gave that to me for Christmas, if you want it, take it.'
'Mind if I try it here first?'
"Go ahead, but if I don't like the job it does, you're going to re-mop those floors!'

I grab the box and limp into the kitchen, tearing it open along the way. Hmm... doesn't look to complicated as I dump the contents onto the kitchen table... that looks like a handle... oh look, instructions-with pictures! Hmmm, okay, take these three handle pieces and snap them together, ok easy enough. Open this little compartment thingy on the backside of the mophead and insert 4 AA batteries (included) and close it back up. Take the bottle of cleanser resist the urge to open the bottle first and place it in the cup shaped holder--if you open the bottle first, you will get a BIG mess-a lesson learned at a later date and time by my daughter. Drop one of the cleaning pads onto the floor printed side up and press the mop head onto it-viola! Now all you have to do is press down on the button up here by the hand grip at the top of the handle to make the cleaner to spray from the front of the mop head and you're off!

Once you get it all together it's actually kind of fun. I went all over Granny's house (there is not one room carpeted in her home-just one lonely rug in the living room). The bathroom, family room, den, kitchen-I did them all. And in about a half-hour, which beats the hours it would have taken me on my hands and knees. And I only used two pads for the whole house-I had expected to use a lot more then that even though the company says that one pad should clean about 2 large rooms it just seemed to me like the pads wouldn't last that long.

I was happy with the results. The floors were not only clean but also shiny. The rooms smelt clean not in a burn your sinus ammonia sort of way but in a nice fresh way. But now for the test-Granny had to critique my work. I admit I was a little nervous...

'You mopped the whole house?'
'Yes Granny.'
'You mopped in here?' motioning into the den.
'Yes, sure did.'
'Doesn't look streaky does it? I hate it when it looks streaky.'
'No, it isn't streaky at all.'
'Did better then I thought it would.' (To those of you who don't know Granny-this is the equivalent to 'lets buy the company')

We went through the rest of the house, and Granny did manage to point out a spot or two that I had missed along the way. You could tell since the spots 'weren't as shiny as the rest of the floor' says Granny. But that's okay, because my Momma didn't raise no dummies, I had brought the mop with me for our inspection so every time Granny mentioned a spot, I was right there to make sure she saw me get it.

The inspection ended back in the kitchen where Granny took the mop from me, tested the weight a couple of times and pushed it back and forth-squirting the solution out when she was pulling the mop back and then proclaiming 'it leaks' until I showed her what had happened. After that it only took her a swipe or two to figure it out and to decide that even she could use this-for those in-between hands and knee moppings of course.

Well, I was impressed myself and I stopped of at Wal-Mart to pick myself up one.

*I will say that at home with my husband, two kids, two cats and a dog I will never be without a 'real' mop for my kitchen floor, but unless we are having company over, the Swiffer WetJet does just fine!
**According to the manufacturer the batteries will last up to 12 months with normal use, which I figure really means 10 months, but hey I can live with that!
