Pros: Excellent when served fresh and warm.
Cons: Though good after cooling, it's just not quite the same.
The Bottom Line: Krispy Kreme donuts are delicious. I believe their entrance into the NY market made Dunkin' Donuts improve their own product.

I'm a partner in an entertainment company. We bring fun events like game shows, sports themed pieces like rock walls and obstacle courses, make your own "Rock Video" set ups, CD Recording Booths, fun Casinos, and many other like items to a variety of places. We do them for Corporate events, college spring flings, holiday parties, picnics, sweet sixteens and Mitzvahs.
NO BOSTON FRANCHISES
Up until relatively recently Boston did not have their own Krispy Kreme store nearby. We were asked to bring this product up to a Boston event as a give away to people as were leaving the catering hall at end of the function. Each person received a cup of coffee, not KK brand, and a box with Krispy Kreme Donuts for their ride home at midnight.
All I can say is that we had to charge a good amount of money to send two people up to make a fresh purchase of Krispy Kreme donuts in a NY location, put labels on the Krispy Kreme boxes stating the party facts of where the function took place, drive up to Boston, and serve them hot from stand-up warming boxes we rented.
The hosts didn't care much about the price. They wanted to share a unique product in their area with their guests. Their choice was Krispy Kreme Donuts, the phenomenon that started in the south and was slowly making its way up to the Boston area. They are now in most of the US states and in other countries.
It was an amazing sight watching all the attention the people gave to the donuts. They all wanted them. They didn't wait to eat them either. The guests, all dressed in formal attire, were getting powdered sugar all over themselves. No longer did these folks show an air of sophistication. It was every man and woman for themselves as they virtually attacked the tables displaying the goods and had us taking them out of the warming boxes as fast as humanly possible. The Krispy Kreme phenomenon continued, everyone had to have one and two and three!
After the grand opening of Krispy Kremes in Connecticut and Rhode Island, Boston now has its own Krispy Kreme stores in the area. They are still a phenomenon in the lines that build up and the sales they make.
The STORE
Most full sized stores have an open bakery area where you can see the donuts being baked assembly line style. Many also have drive through lines. Menus of donuts may vary slightly from store to store and region to region. There are a few donuts that seem to be at every one.
The franchises I have been to are very clean, actually spotless and that's in a place that has powdered sugar products. I have been in stores with long lines that move pretty quickly and some have very short lines, if at all. On Sunday mornings the franchise near us is packed with people. The store does have extra help and the lines, though long, move fairly quickly. Fresh product is constantly being baked. The smell as you drive up to these places is intoxicating.
The PRODUCT
Donuts are their thing. It's my feeling that the best are those that are glazed. The powered ones, though good, don't give that complete sensation of the warm, melt in your mouth feeling.
I have two favorites that I have found everywhere. The first is the Glazed Raspberry filled donut. Oh Man! This is gooooood! The glaze is not just on top, it's all around the donut and it has a wonderful light consistency that adds that sugar fix to a really fine tasting raspberry filling that isn't overly sweet. The combination of the filling, the donut dough and the light glaze that goes into your mouth warm is heavenly.
My other favorite if I'm looking for something light is the Original Glazed Donut. This is the original melt in your mouth. When warm, there is nothing like it.
Krispy Kreme has many other donuts. They have the chocolate iced and chocolate iced, creme filled. Another favorite of mine is the chocolate iced, custard filled. Mmmm, I forgot how good that one is too.
Another popular donut is the lemon filled glazed. The Glazed Cruller is on some people's number one list. Yes, add that one to my list of favorites too.
Strawberry and Blueberry filled powdered donuts are on the menu and another very popular donut is the Cinnamon covered, apple-filled donut. This has a filling with small chunks of apple like a real apple pie. One more donut you can add to my list of favorites is the glazed devil's food donut. This has a rich chocolate taste that has a really fine consistency as you chew it. This one I like just as well cold as warm.
Most of the donuts are incredibly delicious warm. There are about fifteen to twenty selections in all. Most are still good when they cool but you do lose that very special sensation that the warmth gives. I have never had a donut make it to my home where I could try to rewarm it in the micro-wave. Some say that does the trick.
The donut prices vary in different regions. I have found them to be about .60-.75 cents each. They are also sold as a dozen with a slight savings over individual pricing.
These donuts, when I compare them with the local giant in our area, Dunkin Donuts, are lighter in overall feeling.
The fillings have a richer taste without being as sweet.
The donuts as a whole, no pun intended, taste better warm or cooled down than their Dunkin' Donut counterparts. The KK coffee though, doesn't match Dunkin' Donut's offerings.
Krispy Kreme has a selection of different coffees, espresso's and coolers. The selection has gotten larger in recent years with Starbucks and Dunkin' Donut's increasing their liquid refreshment lines. If I'm there I will purchase a coffee but at the same time I would not search them out for that cup-a.
FINAL THOUGHTS
These donuts are becoming more and more available as I find them in a variety of places now. They are not always warm as they are when you purchase them from a fast moving franchise. The fact is the donuts are still good anyways. I read that it's very hard, if not impossible to get a franchise in the US now. The areas have all been covered by people already in the business waiting to open the new stores. So with that knowledge I will give a new twist on the words, "If you can't beat them join them." What I say is "If you can't join them EAT them."
The phenomenon continues.
