A "Thank You" Can Reap Big Rewards

The Bottom Line Always, always let the sponsor of a scholarship that you have won know how much it was appreciated. There is no excuse for not thanking them.

This may be considered to be off topic by some but I feel it is something that is important enough that I am willing to risk it. This isn’t so much about how to apply for a scholarship but a reminder as to what you should do after you have applied and won a scholarship.

Saying please and thank you are something that we all learned as children but sometimes can forget as adults or as young adults. For most of us it isn't that we don't appreciate the things that people do for us or give us, it is just that we tend to either forget or have good intentions of writing that thank you note or making that call but we procrastinate and just don't get it done.

Please don't let this happen when it comes to the scholarships that you receive. It is so important to let the sponsors of the scholarship know how much you appreciate receiving the money. This can be done so simply by just saying "thank you" or better yet writing a thank you note.

I prove my point with this example. Two years ago when my son was a Senior in high school he received one of several college scholarships donated by a local family. He sat down and wrote a thank you note to them. We found out later that he was the only one of the recipients that had taken the time to say thank you to them. I was personally told by two family members from the family that gave the scholarship that his was the only thank you that they had received and how much it meant to them that he had appreciated it so much.

In talking with the high school counselor later she shared with me that the family had also told her that my son was the only one that had taken the time to tell them thank you. Because he was the only one that they felt appreciated it they decided to not offer the scholarship again the next year. I assume it was because they didn't think anyone else appreciated what they had given them.

A year later we were pleasantly surprised when a representative for the family called and offered my son a private scholarship from them. Taking the time to be appreciative certainly more than paid off for my son. Naturally one should not write a thank you note thinking they may reap further benefits. You should write a thank you note because you are genuinely thankful for the financial help that the scholarship is going to give you. And who knows that appreciation shown in the form of a thank you may just net you a reward later. At the least it will tell the sponsor that you are a responsible and appreciative person and they will be glad that you were chosen to receive their scholarship.

In visiting with a friend that teaches in a neighboring town she said that some organizations that used to sponsor scholarships had quit doing so there due to lack of appreciation being shown by the recipients.

So maybe this really does have to do with applying for scholarships after all. If the sponsors know that the scholarships are appreciated maybe they will be more likely to offer the scholarships again so more students can apply for them and receive the much needed financial help.

Please take the time to write that thank you note. It can be so important to the sponsor to know that someone appreciated the money that they gave to them. After all I think if someone is going to hand you over money to help you obtain your dream of an education they certainly deserve a big "THANK YOU".
