I have been a user of another tax return program for several years. This year because of having a minimal tax return I really could not see paying the usual $30-$40 to file online. My husband have found Taxact.com, and decided to do his taxes there. We still filed separately this year for several reasons. I decided to file my on paper with no fees. I left for the morning to work, and he was going to do his taxes. When I got home he was just finishing them up, and said the program was good guided him thru each area. However it did seem to take quite a long time to do them.
Yesterday my mom came for me to do her taxes, I have done them for several years, they are pretty basic, and I have always done them on the other program. This year my hubby told me to use taxact.com it was a lot cheaper, free for the federal taxes, and only $7.95 for our state taxes. Well to save a buck or two I went ahead and we used taxact.com.
We started my moms taxes at 9:30 am, and it seemed to guide us through them okay, but by 2pm I was about to break my computer. Not that her taxes were that in depth, but it took 3-4 minutes for each screen to process. I was ready to just scream.
The first part of the taxact.com program was a waste of my time asking questions that really did not apply to her taxes, and a few screen just to advertise their upgraded version for a fee of $9.95. Understandable, but more waste of my time at 3-4 minutes per screen. I even went offline and signed back on to see if my connection was slow, yes I am still one of those dial up connections. Well no change in the speed. Then I decided to check to see if other programs were running that slow, but no epinions, ebay, my mail all worked just fine, so I knew it was the taxact program. My mom finally left at 2:30 while I was still running thru the checks and warnings. When I finally finished, and it told me I had no errors or stop lights as they call it, I was exhausted and frustrated.
Well as I finished the taxes, and taxact sets up the payment method they not only charged the $7.95 for the state filing but they also charged me another $7.95 for the federal return. So much for the free filing. I tried to find out why they charged for the federal return as well, but have gotten no answer so far. Then even though we filled out the form to use an online signature when I got all done I still had to print the signature form, so now I have to drive to my mothers and have her sign it to mail in. Waste of my time, and waste of gas as she lives an hour away.
Next year I will find another tax program to use I will probably go back to the one I had used previous years. Taxact.com may have been cheaper in the pocketbook, but my time is worth something, and I will never spend 6-7 hours to file taxes again.
UPDATE:
Well to top it all off, the taxes could never be filed thru this site, and they had to be done all over. Then Taxact billed my credit card anyway. I am in the midst of doing battle with them now to get the money refunded that they charged.
