Insomnia is something I have suffered with for many many years. Sometimes I can sit down on the Sofa and I feel sleepy. I can nod off for a short while, then I pick myself up and go to bed. That's the problem BED, it doesn't seem to like me. I start hearing conversations in my head about the daily happenings. What to have for dinner the next day, where to go for the next holiday etc. It drives me and my husband mad.Saying that my husband works shifts and finds it hard to adjust to a good sleeping pattern. I'm not the type of person who get's up and makes a hot drink, I just lie there and think how to get to sleep. One thing's certain, we need sleep more than we need food, so I've been told. Apparently we can survive for up to two months without food, but we can't survive for more than seven to ten days without sleep! What causes insomnia~ People who find it hard to drift off to sleep usually don't have enough Serotonin, which helps make Melatonin, this is the hormone that controls when you sleep and when you don't. If you take Vitamin B6, and eat Carrots, Cheese,Avocados,Lentils,Peas,Spinach and Potatoes , they boost the level of Serotonin. Ways to tackle insomnia~ Try to quieten the mind by writing a list of outstanding tasks well before bedtime, agonise it for a few minutes then try and switch off from it. Take a warm bath before bedtime, put something aromatheric in your bath i.e Sandalwood, Camomile. Exercise about two hours before going to bed, this will release any pent up stress inside and tire you out. Eat Lettuce in the evening, it contains Lactucarium a natural sedative. Have a hot milky drink. All these may be helpful to you. I take Kalms tablets and sometimes Quiet Life, they are non habit forming . I must only need four or five hours sleep , Margaret Thatcher is just the same. Some days though I feel like a Zombie but I always get by. |
