Linux is a great operating system which offers many things, but also has a cost for what it offers.

the notorious name of the Linux IRC client, do it with escape codes -- ya only have to do one letter to fool the lame epinions checker:

You want to type bitchX? See? No problemo.

Its really tough to argue with the cuteness of Tux (that's the Linux penguin's actual name). He was actually designed with certain attitudes and characteristics that Linus Torvalds outlines (such as: he appears to be physically capable, yet is unimposing, etc).

Thanks for the comment!!

I love the penguin (Reply to this comment)

Hi,

My son (user name-marrone) is a big fan on linux. He's my computer expert and can always help me out in a jam.

I liked the penguin so much that I put an animation of him on my homepage-he blinks his eyes. After awhile, I wanted to change the graphic to a camera flashing but my family convinced me to put back the penguin. They love him too. He is so-o-o-o cute. Oh and Linux is great, too.

I enjoyed the well written informative epinion. You write well!

See you again!

My nephew is an avid Linux user-always telling me to switch my hardware and such..I never really had a clear picture of it, and this review helped quite a bit.

I have to agree that there are many people who have VERY violent opposition to Microsoft, and who take it a bit too far. I cannot tell a lie, however, I also hold a grudge to that little company from Redmond (though, they do make programs that I have to give them credit for, which are very good, not all of them are wonderful)...

Thanks for the comment...

Excellent review, and you never mentioned Slashdot!

The only problems that I have with Linux are the installation (gets better every time I install a new rev, though) and the insane anti Micro$oft attitude most users have.

As a business programmer, while I have my beefs with them, there's no denying that they are the company for the majority of American businesses. Period. Linux is making its inroads (and it better -- I'm deep in Red Hat stock :-) but until they lose the juvenile attitude towards the evil empire in Redmond, they'll have a hard time convincing me that they're truly the way to go.

Or maybe I need to spend less time on Slashdot :-)

Great overview!

That's exactly what I thought (which I wrote, "Lih-nucks"), guess my made up phonetical notation didn't work as well as I had hoped... oh well, thanks for the input!!

Heh... that's LINN-Ucks as in "Lynn(the name)-ucks", which I suppose is a "short I". Not "LINE-Ucks" with a long I.

OK, just to be clear... is that LINN with a long 'i'? Or is it with a short 'i'? Chances are that I'll continue to pronounce it the way I do even if I figure out that I am pronouncing it the wrong way.

LINN-Ucks (Reply to this comment)

Straight from the mouth of the Linux creator himself (Linus Torvalds), the official proununciation is "LINN-Ucks". Unfortunately, I have yet to find out whether he pronounces his own name "LINNus".

Hmmmmm.... perhaps I can throw that in on an update.... from everything that I have read, it is pronounced "Lih-nucks", but I've heard it pronounced just about every other way conceivable...

This is pretty much everything I wanted to know about Linux. Except I really want to know how to pronounce it. I think it was developed by a guy named "Linus" which would imply that it's pronounced Lie-nux. However, most people say Li-nux, where it sounds like "finish".
